Well if it’s by design, they lost my business. Was looking at several vehicles and we liked the Grand Highlander but they only had one in stock and it wasn’t what we wanted. We went across the street and bought a vehicle.

We wound up with a Subaru ascent for almost the same reason.

Subaru gave us exactly what we wanted. Toyota not being able to order exactly what you wanted is ridiculous

Have you looked at hilltop? I know they’re known for their food bags, but another buddy of mine just got one of their packs and I was impressed with the quality.

What specifically are you looking for?

My preference for general backpacking:
- roll top with a y strap on top. I find the y strap holds a bear canister better if I need to put it externally than just a standard strap.
- main pack. No brain. No pockets on the exterior. Just a main pack.
- full length stretchy back panel. Lycara would be my material of choice here
- hip belt pockets…. None. If they come with the pack make the modular so I can take them off. I find a Fanny pack is much more utilitarian than hip belt pockets.
- water bottle pockets. Two, tall, and accessible without taking the pack off
- trekking pole loops. Nice for storage. Don’t always use poles while walking but need the poles for my tent.
- shoulder straps……no water bottle pockets. Gimme some loops to hang something like my inreach but I can’t stand sewn in pockets.

I’ve got different preferences for hunting/scouting.

Buddy of mine has an unbound 40 and really likes it.

I’ve got a waymark thru and was disappointed when he folded last year. Absolutely love my bag.

My next bag will be from redpaw, evolved supply co, or palente when it’s time.

Not that any of the brands listed are bad, they don’t offer what I’m looking for in a bag.

Same. Typically I rotate through four pairs during the week.

We picked up a ‘25 ascent for the wife earlier this year. It’s a fun car to drive.

Depends on the year and location but generally an accurate portrayal of COP life in Afghanistan IMHO.

Free standing: BA copper spur

Trekking pole: Durston x mid. IF I had the money I’d have gotten a Zpacks ultaplex and I still might after my Xmid needs replacing.

Pack is tough not knowing your base weight.

Stowe VT - Dinner recs

Heading to Stowe next week and looking for nicer diner recs.

Got Michael’s on the Hill covered but looking to add one more spot for Saturday night.

TIA.
FWIW

We were in the same position earlier this year.

Picked the Subaru ascent over the GH. No regrets so far.

Clear springs FTW.

Just don’t tell too many people about it.

This is the way.

Honda has probably the best AWD system in the industry.

For fuel efficiency yes. But it’s a part time system so that makes sense.

I find Subaru’s system is better in terms of vehicle handling.

Springbar Tents

99.9% sure a classic jack 100 is the route we’re going to go.

have a Kodiak 10x10 VX Deluxe and I am just blown away with it. I bought it in 2020 and I've probably spent 80-100 nights in it. I forego my dad or uncles travel trailer so I can sleep in the tent.

Thanks for the feed back. That tent is on my shortlist. Springbar classic Jack is the other.

I like the extra vestibule option better on the Kodiak.

Canvas tent anyone?

Posted by KI5NKM on 7/12/25 at 7:00 pm
Just returned from a weeklong trip in the smokies and our car camping tent has given up the ghost.

We typically camp typically 25/30 nights a year. AR, LA, and up the east cost typically along the blue ridge are where we head for now.

State parks and national parks are our typical bases.

Space/weight isn’t an issue since this is specifically for car camping.

Before I just pick up another nylon tent, canvas has peaked my interest. Specifically Kodiak and springbar. Anyone using either or a similar style?

Current tent is a Big Agnes Tensleep station.

However, you may want to discuss with him about going to college first and then going to the marines upon graduation

This is why I went the reserve route.

Joined May 2001. Went to recruit training, came home and did my first year at UL (at the time there was a TOW Plt in Broussard).

I was lucky and got to deploy a couple times. Yeah it took me 10 years to get my BA but at the end of the day I got that piece of paper debt free and gained a lot of experience doing it.

I don’t regret my path in the slightest.

With grades like that, go to college via ROTC and join whichever branch as an officer.

He’d be better respected and have more knowledge on how to lead marines as a mustang coming out of the enlisted side vs coming straight out of OCS to the fleet. Again reserve route is the way to go.

I'm looking for information on the trail but haven't found much yet apart from the webpage and facebook page.

I took the google map from their website and converted it to gpx then pushed it over to Gaia.

That’s still 200 miles of road walking. Jupiter Hikes just did the Florida trail with a skateboard. That’s how I’d roll if I’d ever did the Louisiana trail.
