Iceland is a place i have researched a lot as well. Have any of yall made that trip ?

I spent 9 days in Iceland in 2016 and drove the Ring Road, and it's beautiful. It didn't make my list just because it's crazy expensive. The worst was when I got a ticket for driving 130km/hr in a 100 zone, and the ticket cost me $330.

Also, it really has too many tourists now. It's a great place, but you asked for our favorites, and I can't really put Iceland there.

Tough question. Been blessed to have had the opportunity to visit 33 foreign countries so far. Can't say I ever didn't enjoy any of them.

But, here goes:

Favorite by far was Slovenia

Selected Photos

Visiting Kobarid and the battlefields of the Isonzo Front.

Selected Photos

Close Second Is Czechia

Been to Prague Twice. Favorite city in the world. Got to go in December and also spend a few days in Ceský Krumlov. Magical.

Selected Photos.

Honorable Mention: Poland

Really enjoyed our trip last December. Kraków was a beautiful City in the Winter. Getting to visit Auschwitz was a lifetime goal that everyone should see if they can. Warsaw was surprisingly fun for such a big city.

Poland Photos

Auschwitz Photos

Bucket List

#1: Go back to Slovenia and spend a month.

Others:
See Normandy (Actually get to do this in November)
Estonia
Bosnia and Montenegro (Going next spring hopefully)
Georgia (Not likely I can ever get anyone to go with me)

The wife and I did an Italian trip that included time in Rome and Florence followed by a 12 day Adriatic cruise with stops in Italy, Greece, Croatia, Montenegro, and Slovenia. Another good trip was a ten day London/Wales excursion.

I relate to Clark Griswold when he says, “Where are the big rides? The big ones?”

I travel to places to see iconic landmarks, the tallest and the biggest things, and insane landscapes. I don’t give a shite about restaurants, nightlife, and all that jazz.

Give me the Burj Khalifa, the Great Wall, the Pyramids, Mt. Everest, the Grand Canyon, the Taj Mahal, Machu Picchu, and the like. Those are the places I like to see.

Vietnam for me. We plan to live there for a few months after retirement.

Egypt and Israel were really great too, but I don’t have as much of a need to go back.

I’m like you and have a rough idea of the next few years.

Japan
Turkey
Columbia
Maldives combined with another city.

Same. I do like to sample the local cuisine but I’m totally cool eating street food for the entire trip. I haven’t drank in 6 years bc I’m a recovering alcoholic so the nightlife/bar scene doesn’t interest me. I’m all about beautiful scenery and fun things to do . Also , I’m a long distance runner so being able to run in a new place with awesome stuff to look at is a huge plus for me as well.

We’re looking at London /paris over New Years. Greece for early June 23. Bahamas cruise with kiddos July 23

24 -Italy
25- bali or maybe Thailand.

The 2023 stuff is on the books already. Not super stoked about a cruise but that’s what my kids really wanted to do so I’ll deal.

It was ok. Impressive but I’d rather see scenery of natural beauty.

I fell in love with these as well!
Poland was also wonderful!

I just made my 2nd trip to Peru, and it's incredibly diverse in terms of landscape - from the Pacific coastal areas before the Andes, to the Amazon, to the mountainous areas, it's all wonderful! Machu Picchu is phenomenal, but there are SO many other, lesser-known Incan ruins that are fantastic, too!
I also visited the Uyuni Salt Flats in Bolivia on this trip, which are other-worldly!

Australia and NZ will always be on the top of my list of favorite places - incredibly friendly, fun-loving people, and just wonderful countries.

I really should have included Peru in my list as well. I was there for 17 days in 2017, and I agree that Machu Picchu lives up to the hype, but that the rest of the country is underrated. I have a lot of the same pics from Iquitos (including the hut where you danced with the indigenous people). Swimming with pink river dolphins and fishing for piranha were cool too.

I really enjoyed a night on one of the "floating islands" of Lake Titicaca -- I have never seen the Milky Way like that night.

The Temple of the Moon in Trujillo is very impressive, and the Museum of the Tombs of the Lords of Sipan in Chiclayo is probably the best small museum I have ever seen -- it's just breathtaking.

And Peruvian food is awesome. In my opinion, it vies with Mexican food as the best in Latin America.

Out trip in May was to go to Estonia and Latvia, some bucket list places for us. Then Putin happened. SOB, not for us but for Ukraine.

But, with them dropping the countries, it's still a bucket list item, but maybe not sure we'll make it. Tell me, what did you like about these countries. Know they're small. Any preferences or suggestions? Thanks!

Staying close to the US, the "crystal maiden" in so-called ATM cave in Belize is one of the most spine-tingling things that I have ever seen.

I would agree that it's high on my list. I've found that the most far out, hard to get to, either in the mountains or jungle seem to be the best for me.

I'm continually looking for far off the beaten path things to do before everyone else gets there!

They're still "old world," not tourism-driven. Beautiful countryside and the old towns in the larger cities are unspoiled and still medieval in looks.
Just old European beauty. The people are very friendly.

Thailand is one I was looking at today. Didn’t realize how beautiful of a place it is. Did you feel pretty safe in Thailand ? I’ve kinda read mixed reviews on danger over there for tourists.

it's safer than any town in Louisiana. The government understands that tourism is their ticket and has a dedicated police force to protect it. Other than scams and petty theft, you are very very safe.

I have worked in SE Asia several times and am addicted to it .... especially my favorite - Vietnam.

Good to know. Louisiana is getting rough. About 5 years away from being able to get the hell out.

I had an incredible time in Kuala Lumpur. What a cool place. Pretty simple travel from Singapore, too, if you want to knock that out.

Stayed a week in Berchtesgaden way back. I think it's oneof the most beautiful places I've ever been and full of WWII history.
