We did that last summer. We stopped at Robert Is Here fruit stand in Homestead for breakfast. Then Robbie's in Islamorodo for lunch and feed the tarpon. I would recommend both.

Robbie's in Islamorada to feed the tarpon is a must-stop for sure.

Lorelei Cabana Bar is a good spot for a casual meal, especially if you’re passing through around sunset.
ETA: a poster just below mentioned it, so just editing this post to also say Alabama Jacks. Great spot and a perfect intro to the Keys.

Take Card Sound Rd out of Florida City and hit Alabama Jacks for some conch fritters in Upper Key Largo. This is where the Keys begin.

The Fruit and Spice Park botanical, garden in Redlands is very cool. Big outdoor gardens planted with only edible tropical plants, from coffee and cacao to acerola cherry, black pepper vine, and plenty of other fruits. Worth a slight detour.
Also snorkeling trip out of Pennekamp State Park, to the coral reef.

When I lived in Boca I would go down to Hawk's Cay a couple times a year. Hawks Cay Resort If you want to spend the night somewhere along the way you might consider it. I always enjoyed my trips.

Heading down next month. Which beach in the Keys would be good for a day trip from Miami?

Bahia Honda is the best beach in the Keys by far.

Also forgot, go try to find the Key Deer on Big Pine Key. One of the guys at Robbies told us about it. Go down Key Deer Blvd and look for them, we had to go all the way down and into the neighborhood at the end.

I’ve seen them on the side of US1 every time we’ve made the drive.

They're everywhere, had one of them come up to me and eat some trail mix out of my hand at the Winn-Dixie on Big Pine once. Pretty cool to see them.

The key deer are a very cool sight to see, but please don't feed them. Also on Big Pine Key is No Name Pub. Been there forever and has good fritters.

Agreed, Wife and I enjoyed the Sea Turtle Hospital. Feeding the tarpon at Robbie's is a must as others have said.
