My wife (no pics) and I are interested in taking a trip to NYC at some point in 2019. What’s the best time of year to visit? We are considering a week. Is that too long? What are the most “affordable” areas to stay? I’ve been looking at hotels and AirBnB and it’s all pretty expensive. I’ve only looked at places in the middle of everything so I’m sure that’s playing a part.

What are some must do things while there? I only know what I see on TV.

Any help is appreciated!

Stay in Jersey City or Hoboken and ride the train into Manhatten. Hotels are much cheaper. Doing that means you can fly into Newark which is also much cheaper.

One of the best things we did was, first full day, took the "New York in One Day Guided Sightseeing Tour". $89 per person. Get the tickets through Tripadvisor and save some fees. Small, enclosed bus with a good guide.

Hits the high points and lets you get the lay of the land. Includes a boat ride out to the Statue of Liberty. See something you like, go back later to spend more time there.

Learn to use the subway and buses. Best way to get around. Here is a great guide to the trains: The Absolute Beginner's Guide to the New York Subway

Ride the subway to Brooklyn and walk back to Manhattan on the Brooklyn Bridge. That is very cool. Stay out of the bike lane.

Put Citymapper on your phone and use it to navigate to the best subway entrance, bus stop, etc. Put your hotel address in as home. It is an amazing app for travel in any big city. I've used it in London and NYC, and it saves a lot of time.

If you get to the Empire State Building early, you avoid mega lines and won't need to pay the VIP price to skip them. We got there before 9 am and rolled right through. By the time we left around 10:30, lines were big.

Book some tickets for a comedy club if you like that. We had a good night at one.

Theater tickets. We bought for two shows by just walking in the lobby during the day and asking what they had for the next day. They showed us the chart, and we were done. No way in hell was I standing in the lines for the discount tickets in Times Square.

Joe's Pizza on Carmine Street is great.

Walk the High Line

Whitney Museum
Intrepid
Natural History Museum
Metropolitan Museum of Art

Walk the Brooklyn Bridge

Eat halal food from street vendors

Midtown is best location for a first timer, Im a Hilton guy, but other great hotels in that part of the city. Don’t stay in Times Square.

Get a 7 day metro card for $30. Unlimited train/bus rides.

April/May or September/October. Summer is unbearably hot. Winter is rough and very tourist filled around the holidays.

You can stay wherever and get around easily. My advice is to plan the things you want to do and stay closest to where the majority of stuff is.

I’m from New Orleans. I live in NYC. Summers here are just as bad.

Concrete, asphalt, steel, big buildings. The subway is a sauna. There’s not as much central air conditioning so it’s harder to cool down.

Don’t go to Times Square for the ball drop. The coral you for hours and you can’t even leave to use the bathroom.

July fourth week is a good time since everyone leaves the city. My wife and I stayed at a local hostel, non chain, 1 block off Times Square. Perfect location and was only 90 a night for a week. Walkable to almost everything and real close to the subway. Get Statue of Liberty tickets ahead of time if you want to go to the crown or the feet of the statue. Liked New York so much going for a quick visit right after Xmas until the 30th. Lots to do that a week won’t allow you to do everything

This. It’s like walking around on a frying pan. I’ll take summers in LA over summers in NYC. July and August are brutal.

I will never understand the hype/appeal of halal food from a cart. shite is gross.

IMO, NYC is best during the Christmas holidays because I think NYC captures the holiday spirit better than any other major city. After that I like early fall because the weather is at its best. Too much rain in the spring, and while I have fond memories of NYC in the summer, its not the best first impression.
As for price, nothing in NYC is cheap.
A week isn't too long at all, the only pain will be in your wallet.

VRBO has better deals than AirBNB when we went

Stayed in an apt in the Upper East Side for 4Days at $385.

Find a place close to the stop of an EXPRESS train. We were around the corner from the 6 line and could reach most destinations ridiculously quick

End May/Early June or Late September are my favorite times to go to NYC although I do love Xmas in the city.

Chelsea Market - Dickson's Farmstand Meats had some of the best sandwiches I've ever had. Market also has a lot of other great options.

Top of the Rock was pretty cool but gets packed quick.

John's of Bleecker had the best pizza IMO.

= more shade. I don't see the issue.

The subway cars are air conditioned (unless you get really unlucky). Subway stations are a little gross in the summer, but most people can tough out 5 min down there. The city is dirty and shitty in general, so it's not like 5 min of sweating in a tunnel is going to really ruin your day.

I also don't know what kind of places you are frequenting, but there is typically AC in any place that a tourist is going to stumble into, and in most other places for that matter. It's not 1920.

I wouldn't shy away from a summer trip to the city.

You just don’t get it, despite people who live here telling you otherwise.

Nah. You're just expressly stating that you don't really know what you're talking about. That's fine. Again, you've had three different people who live here tell you that you're wrong, but you want to keep on keeping on. Most people would tend to take a step back and reassess their stance.
