Curious about the board's preferences, as I just saw the "road trip" recommendation. When I was younger, I definitely enjoyed going to many different places and road-tripping from one destination to the next.

As I've gotten older and have kids to deal with that is, frankly, my version of hell. We just spent two weeks out West. We did 3 nights in Santa Fe, 2 nights in Durango, 2 nights in Frisco, CO, and then a week in Winter Park, CO (mountain bike nationals). The week in one spot was SO MUCH more enjoyable than bouncing around. Maybe it's because we are traveling with a ton of gear and bikes, but living out of a suitcase and trying to pack/unpack the car and bike every time we move is a nightmare. Once we got to Winter Park, we were able to unload everything, move into the AirBNB, buy groceries, and basically make ourselves at home (and enjoy ourselves).

Don't get me wrong, I liked the first part of our trip, but I just found myself wishing we would have chosen to stay in 1 location/house for the 1st week and then moved to Winter Park, rather than visiting 3 different places in a week (and having to load/unload every couple of days).

The flip side to this, is when we travel, we just bang out the driving. We don't stop and see anything and basically stop only for gas until we reach our destination. So I sometimes feel like we're missing out on some cool side trips and fun stops as we rush past them on our way to our destination.

Curious where other people fall on the preference for bouncing around or staying in one place.

I enjoy both type of trips. Depends on the destination & goal of the trip.

We've done two separate 10 day road trips with kids over the last couple summers totaling about 3,500 miles. Both were fantastic.

Also enjoy a week in the same place, whether it's at the beach or in a major city that has a lot to offer.

I don't relate to this being a nightmare at all.

I tend to stay in one place and travel to visiting cities. Depending on how long the stay is depends how far I'll venture out but I enjoy going at my own pace racing than trying to cram as much in as possible. Plus if I enjoyed something I can go back again and check it out.

Depends on the trip but in general I’d rather stay out or limit the number of places to a handful in order to really experience them.

I often hear of people going to Europe (just using as an example here) and trying to hit up places like London, Paris, Rome, etc. in a two week or so timeframe. All you end up doing is rushing around to check out the major sites then hop on a train to somewhere else and rushing around there looking at major sites just to catch another train and….

That’s just not my idea of a vacation. Using that example, I’d be much happier spending those two weeks in one or two locations.

This as well. The itinerary that is really tight from one sight to the next bothers me. Like you, we stay in a central spot but often "day trip" out to surrounding spots, returning to the house at night.

We also have a family that likes to do different things. One son and I really spend a lot of the vacations mountain biking whereas my wife and other son like to do a lot of reading/working as well as hiking and general sightseeing. So we can leave them at home to walk out from the AirBNB while my other son and I can drive out with the bikes... or conversely... they can take the car out if they want to go far and we can ride the bikes out from the AirBNB.

I agree, but its also not easy to know what you will like and using your example most peoeple it would take over 10 years to have 3 different trips to go to ROme, Paris, and London. So while staying in one of them may be prefered and there's plenty to do, waiting that long to explore the others is a gamble also.

ETA: Your options are rarely the perfect play. Its usually what do you want to risk, not seeing something at all or not seeing enough of 2 things? The one benefit of not seeing enough, is that you get to find what you really liked and then go back.

The bikes are probably what make it a nightmare. Loading and Unloading 4-5 bikes at a hotel room is pretty awful, especially if you have to push up stairs or use an elevator. Then your room is also filled with bikes (unless the hotel has a good, secure storage room). That's another piece, I guess: AirBNBs allow us to more conveniently deal with the bikes, but staying at AirBNBs for single/double nights doesn't always make financial sense with the fees.

That makes sense. I've never brought a bike on a vacation.

With kids staying in one place for the most part.

Now that kids are grown bounce around and make plans on the run. If we see something that looks fun we go. Solo trips almost completely no plans at all. Just go.

I tend to go to 2-3 areas of a state/country, etc and spend 2-3 nights in each of them depending on how much there is to see and do. Yes, I don't get all the in depth stuff at each place, but I do get all the can't miss ones and since I had FOMO before it existed, that works for me. I generally like to end with a more relaxing place for the last couple of days and take it easier and just enjoy the scenery.

I have done both. I prefer to do as little bouncing around as possible.

Beach - stay in one place. I'm there to relax.

Europe - hub and spoke. I find a centralized place to base but give myself a pretty long leash for day trips or guided excursions to see stuff outside of the main cities.

Other - depends.

More times than not we prefer to stay in one spot. We may use that location as a hub and bounce regionally (like staying in Sedona but doing Grand Canyon or next month when we go to Boston we will do a night on The Cape) but I don't want to pack up, check out, re-check in somewhere else.

We definitely bounce around.

Our next vacation (leaving aside long weekend trips) is 4 hotels in 7 nights.

The one after that is 10 hotels in 15 nights.

We like to do 3 days per larger city or national park. Then going mobile through the country for 3 days stopping in small towns each night. Then hit another bigger city for 3 days.

Completely agree with you and to be clear I don’t think there’s a wrong way for someone to travel. Do what makes you happy. I just outlined how I prefer to travel.
