I went in 2011. Pyramids are probably the coolest thing I’ve ever seen in my life. And I’ve seen lots of cool shite.

I’ll see if I can find some info for you baw

I am looking to go next year. I've had this and Istanbul booked in the past and had to cancel both for obvious reasons. I really want to get out there and pick up some ancient piece of history for the start of my collection.

Any progress with planning your Egypt trip? I am considering tacking this onto the end of a Europe trip later this year.

Heard Adventures by Disney was setting one up. Probably will be expensive as hell, but I’ve heard they are the best.

I went when I was a kid. I can't remember the tour company's name.

But I highly recommend a cruise on the Upper Nile. It was one of the neatest places I've been.

That being said, a friend of mine went last December and walked by a group of locals who started chanting "death to Americans" in English.

A friend of mine got a really cheap flight from the west coast and went back in February. He got a guided tour for the pyramids etc and then just walked around the area near his hotel and never felt unsafe. He isn't hardcore I am here for the local experience type person either.

At the same time, I can totally see the story your friend told you happening.

I realize this is an older post that got necro'd but hopefully this will help anyone looking for a safe way to travel in Egypt.

American Star Travel

These guys handle arrangements for the US military and can provide anything from a simple guided tour to full armed escort with former Egyptian special forces. They know the palms to grease and they do it very well.

I’ve been before the overthrow of Mubarak and after. It’s a much more hostile place. In comparison to Pakistan, which seemed incredibly hostile to Americans, Egypt is on par.

That being said, I know the organized tours provide better insulation from all that (those don’t really exist in Pakistan). Try and get a British based tour, I hear good things.

I went by myself in November. Did everything I wanted to do and never felt unsafe.
