Is it worth a trip to SD?

Blackhills are great but Rushmore is underwhelming.

^^^agreed. Go for the other stuff there and pass by Rushmore while there. If you go strictly for Rushmore you'll be sorely disappointed.

It’s worth seeing if you are in the area but I wouldn’t make a special trip.

Passed through Rapid City on an extended trip out west 10+ years ago. It was cool to see it, but there's not really much to do at the memorial other than see it and see/read/hear a bit about Borghlum and the process of creating the monument.
You can also see it from driving along SD-244 and not have to pay the $10 parking fee. I don't remember if there were pulloffs along where you could stop and look/take pictures or not.

Agree w/ the posts above. We went last year and there are a lot of places to visit in southwest SD and eastern WY. Google Rapid City, Custer State Park, Badlands, Deadwood. Until I started planning our trip I had no idea there was that much to do there.

Wind Cave National Park is a very good stop

My experience at Rushmore is that it's one of those things you do to say you did it and check it off the list. Like others said its pretty underwhelming - the mountain is a lot higher up than you would think, and it looks a lot smaller than it looks in pictures. Pictures you see of it are zoomed in.

Yep.
Blackhills and the Badlands are awesome to explore.
Mt. Rushmore is something to say you saw it, but other than that, its just a neat novelty thing. Take a helicopter tour to get actual views of the mountain.

It’s a great area to see, but the biggest thrill for me at Rushmore was spotting it the first time in the distance. I don’t think we spent more than an hour actually touring it. Chief Crazy Horse monument was more impressive to me. Spearfish Canyon was my favorite part of the trip.

Make it a stop not a actual trip

What? While I agree with everyone else about Rushmore, you’re the only person I’ve ever heard say this. Wall Drug is more impressive than crazy horse in his current state (which it’s pretty much been in during my lifetime).
Badlands, minute men missile silo, Custer state park, Rushmore, wind-cave, jewel-cave, devils tower. There are several things to see and do in the area

It's one of those places that is cool to see once and not spend any substantial time there. I agree with the other posters, the area surrounding it is better. Jewel and Wind Cave were more interesting.
Agreed, crazy horse was worse and they nickle and dime the shite out of you. I wouldn't bother with it.

I went 35 years ago when my uncle worked for the Nebraska State Parks Commission. We stayed at Chadron State Park in NW Nebraska and drove 30 minutes up to Mt. Rushmore.
Rushmore was interesting, but I enjoyed Wind Cave and Jewel Cave much more. They're much more fascinating to me.

Crazy Horse is a labor of love through several generations of a family working with limited resources. The Indians wanted their memorial to be comparable to Rushmore. They show a video in their gift shop about the history of the project; it’s humble and it appealed to me. Walls was OK, glad we went there but would be ok skipping it next time. We did buy new wedding rings across the street from it, though. (Black Hills gold). We were on a bike, so we really loved Devil’s Tower, Custer State Park and Iron Mountain Rd.

Cave access was closed earlier this summer.

I will disagree with most here. We went and saw the fireworks on July 3, 2000 I think it was. They don’t always do fireworks anymore, but it was the best fireworks display I’ve ever seen.
That said, we had to spend all day there to be able to see the fireworks. If you take the time in the museum to really learn about Mt Rushmore there is a lot of interesting things to learn.
Also do the Crazy Horse, badlands, take a trip over to Devil’s Tower in Wyoming, etc. Lots to do in the greater area.

My college roommate and his wife lived there for a few years when he was in the Air Force. The joke about Mt. Rushmore was to only look at one head when you take a trip there--that way you'd have something to do for the next three years.
Although there is another rock formation nearby that is...interesting. Different kind of head.
