I've only flown twice but I'm looking at flights to Boston out of Huntsville, Al. The fastest flight is a 33 minute layover at Ronald Reagan International. Is that enough time to get from one plane to the next? I have no idea what terminal either flight is in to look up a map, maybe because I'm booking through my capiotol one card using points. I know alot of people on this board fly often so just looking for any insight. TIA

Would you be booking one ticket or are you looking to book those legs separately. If it's one ticket you should be fine but I would not do that on my own with different tickets.

What are the plane types for the flights? I think DCA is easy to connect at but if the gates are far apart then it'd be cutting it close. I did 30 min at Minneapolis a few weeks ago and survived albeit it moving quickly. Also, last flight of the day or morning/afternoon? That'd determine my risk tolerance

Your chances of missing the connection are fairly high given that any delay will put you in a bad spot. You will probably make it, but your chances of not making it are much higher than if you had an hour. To be honest, your inexperience flying probably increases the odds.

I’d probably try it but it depends on how badly I needed to be in Boston on time and what my other options were.

Also, Cuse will have good advice so I’d listen to him not me.

You may be better off driving to Atlanta/Bham/Nashville and seeing if they have direct flights. 33 minutes is doable, but it's cutting it close. I avoid connecting flights if at all possible.

None from BHM. Definitely a lot from ATL. And I assume several from BNA. That probably does make sense. Should be cheaper too.

I assume from Hville through DC that’s on American.

Thanks for all replies. It's a flight at 6 in the morning so plenty of other flights that day. No reason to get to Boston at any certain time, just hoping to get in early enough to enjoy the city for the afternoon. I checked flights out of Nashville and they are only $100 cheaper and an hour shorter. I live about 15 minutes from Huntsville airport so it's about convenience. Thanks again, There are other flight options with a little longer layover, I will probably go that route just to be safe.

That's a tight connection. It's not necessarily unworkable but if the first flight is delayed thats your problem.

National is pretty easy to get around otherwise.

I'd 100% book the connection in your case. You have all day to get there, plus you're more than halfway there already in DC. American has a ton of flights from DC to Boston and if the next one is full ask to connect somewhere like NYC. I'm pretty sure if you're delayed in Huntsville, there's an early morning flight to Charlotte or Dallas as well that can get you to Boston before you leave AL

Forgot to add if this is the cheapest flight as well, book it. When is the flight scheduled for?

Reagan is a tiny airport and no airline spans more than one terminal, which means your walk from gate to gate will be no more than three minutes.

However, with any sort of delay, you’re cutting it close.

I didn’t even know we had connecting flights at Reagan.

This summer I had a 40 min layover at DCA heading to VT. Luckily I only had to go over a few gates but had plenty of time. On the way back I had an hour layover but ended up getting to the gate with 5 mins to spare because we circled the Chesapeake Bay for a while.

as the others said there will be plenty of options to Boston from DC if you get delayed. If it’s the cheapest flight then book it

It’s a gamble . 45-1hr lay over is my sweet spot . Haven’t had an issue in 22 years of flying

Not trying to be a jerk but I don’t understand this. If an airline flies to and from multiple destinations out of an airport, how can it not have “connecting” flights?

DCA connection will require no terminal change if you're flying on the same airline.

There are certain airports that have connecting flights and some that don’t. Many smaller airports don’t.

For instance, you probably can’t find a flight where you connect in BTR or SHV, right? In the same way, I was unaware that we had connecting flights at DCA. It’s a small airport with “hubs” for all airlines relatively nearby. So I assumed that for every flight in and out, passengers were either leaving from their origin or arriving at their final destination

No one has asked basically the most important question yet- what row are you sitting in? Row 1 vs row 25 has an impact on connection time. Personally I would book it.

Well then what you do is look at the seat map. If you are the last row then it swings the decision.

Something that hasn't come up so far... We don't know if you're changing airlines (from AA to DL, etc.) If you are, you will not make it. You're just flying to Boston, so it'll probably be fine, eventually, but I'd also suggest considering ATL as the source to give yourself more options. I picked rando dates in April, and there are ten direct flights in one day from ATL to BOS.
