Heading to visit the in-laws in Germany this winter and we want to make a pit stop in Spain. We will be visiting a friend in Valencia but we were thinking about doing a couple days in Barcelona as well. Is 2 days not enough time? The only things I would have to see/do would be the La Familia Sagrada and eat as much as possible.

Hell to the yeah!

One of the great cities in the world.

BUT..

"Pit stop in Spain".

So MUCH you could do. Definitely worth 2 days. We didn't get to go to Girona, but there's that as well for a potential day trip.

Actually, I'd prefer San Sebastian or Bilbao.

I spent a week there and loved it.
Two days are better than nothing.
Beautiful city, lots to do and see and a great food scene.

If you are just going to be there for two days, make sure you reserve tickets in advance for the things you want to see because sometimes they book up a couple of days in advance. Sagrada Familiga and Parc Guell are two examples. Get tickets for the park as soon as you know the weather will be nice for the day you want to go. The downtown Gaudi mansions we got in the same day after standing in a short line.

Barcelona is a great city that really needs several days to experience. But you could do Sangrada Familia in a few hours, get the VIP tix which are not much more than the regular tix and you can skip the long line. Parc Guell is another Gaudi design that is cool and he has some apartments he did that are cool. I think we did Sangrada and an apartment in 1 day and Parc Guell another day .

Barcelona is in my top 5 in the world.

Don't hesitate...soend however much time you can go and be thankful. It's a special place. The Catalunyian people are special too...very different from the rest of Spain.

Sagrada Familia is the most unique and impressive church I’ve ever been in. Wouldn’t normally pressure folks to visit it, but you absolutely should. Do that for 2 hours or so one day. rest of time spend rambling around the Born and agothic quarter. Go up to the roof of the old Cathedral. saunter around the waterfront and Barcelonetta. or head up Monjuic to the Miro musiuem (I liked it, wife did not).

But most of all just eat your way around the city. Quimet y Quimet, Canate, Tapas 24, Mosquito, I could go on and on. Barcelona is a fantastic city, yeah you could spend a week there but two days better than none.

Barcelona is worth however many days you can afford to stay there. Incredible city with a ton to do and see.

I did two days in Barcelona a few years back when traveling in the area. It was worth it and I suggest doing it.

It all depends on where you are taking those two days from of course.

And my two days there made me realize I need to come back. Perhaps after the Sagrada is complete. ..if that ever happens.

San Sebastian

Great city but PITA to reach. The folks in Madrid have long carried a grudge and San Sebastian has a small airport with expensive flights or a long train ride.

I appreciate the tips, guys. To clarify, I just want to know if I should wait to visit barcelona until I can spend more time there. We go to europe 2 times a year so I will have more chances but we have a few more places we want to see first. I just figured I could cross it off the list since we are going to valencia anyways but 2 days may not do a trip to barcelona justice.

But what is your alternative, an extra 2 days in Valencia? I'd take the opportunity to hit Barcelona just so you can look at the city up close and mentally map out what you'd want to do the next time.

Good point. We would probably spend an extra day in Valencia and head back to Germany a day early. I think you guys have convinced me to check out Barcelona, though.

You go to Europe twice a year and this is the first time you’d even considered putting Barcelona on the list?

Not that Valencia will be much different, but I'd eat so much great stuff at breakfast in Barcelona that I'd have to go back up to my room to take a nap.

I was at the Four Points by Sheraton Barcelona Diagonal, and the location was good for Sagrada Familia, as well as people watching for people walking to/from the beach, while you stuff your face with tapas on the boulevard under the trees.

Huh? Where did I say that? Our goal since 2019 has been to go 2x a year so she can visit her parents. Covid messed that up a bit but we have agreed spend all of our travel budget/time with trips to Germany since she has agreed to live in the states. I’ve always wanted to go to Barcelona but I have other places I’d like to hit first.

Two days in Barcelona is fine. If you feel like you want to spend more time there you will have the opportunity to do so. I enjoyed Barcelona but you can see a lot of it in two days.

Yes. See Sagrada. Easy tons of Tapas.
Gambas al ajillo was my go to. Shrimp cooked in garlicky olive oil.
Walk LA Rambla, check out Barcoleneta and the old city.
I did a lot on 3 days. 2 is good.
Worth a stop. It was great fun just walking from bar to bar getting a drink and a tapas or a pincho from each.
The sea front is nice and the old city worth viewing.

Keep you valuables close though. They will have street performers in places. Then have gypsies in the crowd that steal.
When ever the crowd stops or is congested keep your valuables close.
