They've lost their frickin minds with that price.

No reason to upgrade. AI and shite is the last thing I need on my streaming box

I mean if memory prices continue on their current trajectory it might be worth it just for that alone...

They needed to step it up with audio. I'm sure it will be a very snappy streamer, but $300 is steep. I'll stick with my Shield Pro with the AI upscaling and audio passthrough of DTS-HD MA, Dolby TrueHD, etc..

Forgive my ignorance, but I don't understand the demand for these boxes? I have a smart TV, and I have several subscriptions that I access directly from my TV (including AppleTV).

Is this box and other similar boxes made for people that don't have a smart TV?

Issue is that built in TV OS:
1. Are loaded with spyware
2. Age quickly
3. Don’t support a lot of apps.
4. Often can’t handle or don’t support media servers that typically serve movies at 4x-10x the quality of “streaming services.”
5. Often don’t support DRM-free apps like tivimate or kodi.

I have a 3 year old Roku Ultra and every app on it outperforms the same app on my TCL8k.

Picture quality, motion handling, app responsiveness, it’s all better

Thanks for the reply. What you said makes sense. I have a smart tv and just use basic streaming apps so it does the job for me. I can see where people who need something more robust would opt for a better OS.

Ridiculous price. Current ones before today were over priced for what Apple does with them.

Adding far field mics to the actual device on top of the one in the remote also make this a no without a hard wired on/off switch. Apple sucks at software these days as Tim went bargain based with software, and they rely on others to catch their mistakes and don’t do a good job at patching quickly. tvOS is already like it’s step-child and gets little attention outside of the shared code with iOS and iPadOS. I doubt they will stay on top of mic access on their own and will have bugs galore to exploit.

Apple will not even enforce one video player to have consistency with interfaces between video services. I would love to go back to original one where swiping up brought up play functions and swiping down brought down description and other settings & info. I am forever moving my thumb 1 mm when pausing/unpausing or rewinding/scrubbing and unknowingly shifting selection to captions or some other setting.

Somehow Prime has channels for Peacock and HBONow while Apple only has their apps while also making it more difficult to distinguish existing channels from apps. The home screen was supposed to be the owners according to Tim, but then Tim allowed it to be theirs to push their crap, others crap, and political crap. I have control of the top row of what I have started to watch.

Don’t need Siri much less SiriAI on my AppleTV with Apple’s current lack of focus, lack of tvOS home app, and lack of pushing home hardware product that they already have multiple key parts in their supply chain that can be used.

Apple TV has stayed a hobby and had a lot of potential wasted, and now they want to sell a new one to have same lack of support at $300.

Homeview? Could have added a cheap iPad screen and distributed work and storage with Apple TVs years ago, but somehow Apple TVs are a home hub without actually having the home app.

Tim’s handpicked successor who basically only knows Apple and Tim’s way was another move away from being visionary. He even tried to dress like Tim’s dorky arse. Tim was a great operator, a supply chain wiz, and a record breaker at buying back stock to prop it up; but he was a horrible tech visionary, an even worse leader, and a hardcore DEI believer and pusher.

Apple hasn’t been visionary in a long time and if they started acting that way, their stock would plummet. They’re a multi trillion dollar company because they operate a very lucrative tool booth racking in ridiculous percentages of any services delivered through their ecosystem, all for doing basically nothing. They’re have way more to gain by keeping hardware familiar vs cutting edge.

I’m with you on this one.

Can’t stand the differences between Netflix video player and apple’s and F1’s and Disney’s etc.

Stop using integrated smart tvs for streaming

It’s awful. And DONT buy a FireTV. It’s bogged down with 20 Amazon apps that you can’t delete

I don’t know… I have a brand new cheap arse no name tv on my patio and the builtin apps stream football just fine. I have a spyware LG in my living room and those apps are pretty fast. Adding a 30% markup for a third party streamer seems a bit much. My phone is listening anyway, who cares if my tv is too. It can scan all my smart lightbulbs it wants on my network.
