Is anyone else worried that Google and Amazon are taking over our lives?

Pretty much what we 'see' on the Internet, phones we use, every single song, photo and video we've taken in the last 20 years, what we 'buy' on the internet, and now we're paying THEM to add spy cameras and listening devices in every room.
aren't you the least bit concerned these are the people you are turning over every last shred of privacy to?

I wouldn't disagree with the sentiment, but there are major problems with doing anything about it.
It started with cell phones, too, that's problem #1.
Further, 2 problems with it: 1) It is embedded in every day life 2) Convenience
For me, physically distant from all of my old friends, and every single family member I have, I could choose to do without a cell phones and social media, but then I would pretty much cease to exist to everyone I've known outside of SLC. I mean, that's what it was like in the old days. When you were separate...you were separate outside of the maybe one or two trips back home you make every couple of years.
Convenience requires one to ignore security. Convenience allows for efficiency, productivity, etc. I just don't see myself as productive without automation, smart devices and software, etc.

Yes and no. My wife is concerned about having nest cameras in the house. But then I asked her "Even if someone cracked our password and logged in to our account - who wants to watch a 4 year old and a 2 year old sleep?"
I get the sentiment but I don't think I'm that important that anyone wants to watch my boring arse house and kids rooms. Also, my cams spend 95% of the time recording an empty room.
Now, if you're an important or famous person, sure. Don't do any of that shite.
ETA: I think I'm all in on Skynet. Let them make our lives easier. Until they murder us all but at least it'll be a fun run until that day happens.

Yes, they are going to cause a major shift in my industry.

I wouldn't say that. It would be more accurate to say that we are voluntarily surrendering some of our privacy in exchange for enhanced communication and information access.

i am all for technology advances but its frightening how quickly the 'web' has devolved into maybe 10 different tech companies.

When I was younger I cared, now that I’m older I have no fricks to give. My life isn’t that interesting and I like the convenience of telling Alexa to turn shite off that my damn wife and kids leave on constantly without getting up or yelling every five minutes.

I mean if my porn preferences are that important to them then so be it

I actively fight it.
Sailfish phone

Brave Browser
Duckduxkgo/Startpage search
Protonmail email
Gab.ai as a twitter alternative
As far as amazon, just don't shop there.

Anyone see the X Files episode last week?
This exact concept to the extreme.

Why? What do you have to hide from the government?
I just don’t understand the people who obsess over this type of stuff...
I have a cousin who is like this. He refuses to download any apps on his phone (‘just read the user agreement man. They get access to your photos and your browsing history’
), has like 3 firewalls for his computer, and believes in just about every conspiracy theory out there... one of the last conversations we had a few months ago, he told me he was worried that ‘people’ were out to get him because he ‘knows too much’ about what really goes on behind closed doors.... he’s 31 and has an engineering degree from a great school but refuses to try to get a job.... I worry about him sometimes, but he’s convinced that the government wants all of his info
