Today is January 9, which means it's been 15 years since Apple CEO Steve Jobs stood on stage at the Macworld Expo in San Francisco, California and gave the world its first look at the iPhone, a device that would go on to change everything.

Legit probably the biggest advancement in my 34 years.
The internet is actually number 1, but as far as a device… iPhone takes it

Didn't they steal the design from a Chinese company?

Skipped the fist one, but got the 3G. Blew some Boomer minds during an LSU baseball game rain delay showing them the radar on my phone

meh.
after the announcement (it was 6 months until it hit the shelves at least) the XDA devs skinned the windows phone to look exactly like it and i installed the skin and the next day at work my apple homo coworkers came into my office to laugh at me and I whipped out my 3 year old SDA and showed them i already had the new iphone.
and bonus: i could actually copy and paste on the MDA and had a keyboard.
ugly? you bet but it sure did piss them off.

I mean, sure, but I assume you’re not trying to argue that showing today’s weather in a little graphic has the same impact as showing someone high quality live radar in motion to ballpark when the rain delay might end. Again, based on the look on their faces, it might as well have been fricking witchcraft

The iPhone 3 gave me shingles. True story.

i dont disagree. i was rocking windows mobile 2003 for YEAAARS before the iphone and nobody gave a shite.
just ask RIO and the other mp3 player companies who apparently didn't exist for years prior to the ipod showing us you could store digital music.

i mean i'll give apple props for getting these things into the hands of suburban moms. they made this stuff consumable.

I still have my original IPhone 2g 4 gigs. And it still works on wifi. And in the box.

Imagine being an adult and not understanding the significance of the iPhone on a device that now literally pervades our lives every waking moment, posted on a board devoted to Technology...

I've never owned an iPhone. I went straight from Blackberries to Android phones. But I know that the iPhone changed everything. At that time, Android was already way better software than iOS, but the Android guys were stuck thinking like Blackberry, that a physical keyboard was still the way to go. Steve Jobs was a frickin' genius. He didn't invent all of these things Apple introduced, but he saw the future and how people could use technology. The introduction of the iPhone sent the Android team back to the drawing board because they sudddenly saw the future too. Blackberry stuck to their guns because that's what made them the dominant phone, and now they're history.
Here's a good article about that time:
https://www.theatlantic.com/technology/archive/2013/12/the-day-google-had-to-start-over-on-android/282479/
Remember, the first Android phone, the HTC G1, had a slide-out keyboard because they still felt like they had to hedge their bets.
My brother still has his, it's a cool relic. I think I still have my Nexus One (with the Blackberry ball) stashed away somewhere.

i tortured myself with several windows mobile phones before learning how to flash an android ROM onto the phone and get a different experience.
good ol' HTC
my biggest memory is that it took just under 3 minutes to reboot a windows phone
and it crashed often. but yep, slide out keyboard and toothpick stylus.
in fact i'm staring at my old silver SDA as we speak; my 7yo somehow found it (thought it was long gone) so i tried to get it to boot since i still have teh apple iphone 'fish' skin on it but the battery is shot.

Got my new iPhone 13 Pro in today and converted from iPhone XS Max.
No problems with peer-to-peer transfer. Smooth and easy.
Fired it up — 5G from the start.
