...in my 2019 Ford pickup. Acts all glitchy. Like voice commands not recognizing someone's name, no matter how clearly I pronounce it. It'll shut off and I hafta disconnect and reconnect the USB. And no matter what I try, it can't do group texts.

Are these just flaws of the app, or are there fixes I haven't found?

TIA

Yes Android Auto and Apple CarPlay are half arse products.....very strange that the companies won't fix them.

I was in a rental with it this past weekend and asked for directions in Waze to a place that I was not familiar with. It was a pretty normal type of name of a town. Android Auto responded with "No directions for who dafrick dis"

I was quite confused but remembered later that my wife and I have an account that syncs some contacts between our two phones, and she is very mature- once naming a contact from a group text that she saw a lot "Who dafrick dis?"

It caught me by quite a surprise. Especially because the name of the town we were traveling to was- again- not including an expletive and two very common words, definitely not three.

It made me laugh.

Usually it makes me angry when I either call "Mom" or a 6-syllable-long Indian buddy of mine.

I used to think I just talked like a dumbass.
You're giving me hope that it's her, not me.

I want to like Android auto but I hate it. Just use your phone and stop being nanny-stated by your car system

Your just not trained yet.

Pretty soon everyone will be sounding and talking the same with our regional dialects removed. Mono syllabically trained we'll be in sync and one with the machine. AI it's not just for the chip but the dip on the other end.

I use Android Auto all the time with no issues but I'm usually only using it for Waze and Spotify.

I use it every day. It's not perfect but it works well enough for me.

The biggest issue i have is whenever i press the microphone to send a message the google assistant voice says "ok, what's the message?" and then after i state my message she includes the word "message" in her playback. It's like she turns her microphone on early to listen for me but catches her last words.

It's annoying, but i try not to really respond to much to people when i'm driving anyway.

I have an early version of Carplay with a Pioneer receiver. It's a crapshoot if it will work and the failures are rarely the same. It's great when it works though.

So to sum up: Android 10 might remove the phone interface for Android Auto, but there are some solutions to get it back; and medium term Google is going to put something in the Google Play store to bring it back. However, long term the plan is for the Google Assistant to take over.

That explains what’s happening but it doesn’t explain what is happening at Google. There is a vision here, where interacting with your phone involves having the Assistant seamless handle apps for you so you’re not tapping when you should be driving. The upcoming Pixel 4 with its native Assistant capabilities may even come close to realizing it, too.

My apologies. She always compares herself to a surfboard, so I guess she thinks she looks like this:

I love Apple CarPlay. It looks great and I have no glitches. I can’t wait until I have ios 13 which will make it even better.

I use android auto and apple CarPlay (primary). I prefer CarPlay which is hard to say as I typically prefer android products. I don’t find Android auto is glitchy for me. I did have serious problems with CarPlay for a while but it turned out it was the phone and not the truck radio. If possible, try another phone.

The problem for me with android auto is that I want icons/buttons to push. They want it to be voice activated but that doesn’t work well when you have kids in the car constantly making noise. CarPlay gives me to option to choose Waze, set my destination then switch to pocketcast and back to waze pretty easily. Android auto feels more clunky to me.

The main thing I dislike about CarPlay is that the phone display and CarPlay display are tied together so I can’t have one app visible on the phone while something else is visible on CarPlay. Android auto does allow that and it’s nice.

Are you running updated Oreo or Pie 9.x on your phone. My S8 on 8.x worked fine in a 2014 Ford SUV, then got a 2017 Pilot and it's system was slow initially but once locked in fine, has been rock solid with update to Pie. If may sound funny, but the cable you use to connect to the USB port is going to function much better with the original charging cord or a high quality replacement like Anker, etc. Made a night a day difference in the Pilot after doing that, plus having it connected prior to starting your vehicle. If I have to use a fall back it starts dropping the connection after about 8 to 15 minutes of use.

I'm running Android 9.

My new Anker cable showed up today. These must be good ones, as they have their own serial number.

No go. In fact, it won't connect at all just charges. I tried both new cables, reinstalled AA, all to no avail.

I'm like this close to using ear buds in the pickup.
