People really are expecting too much out of Google. Do they have a lot of resources? Yes. Is their goal to satisfy consumer needs? No. Their goal is find new ways to monetize you. You are their product. Look at GBoard. There is a reason it exists on iPhone and not Android. It was built to create a new vector to profile iPhone users. It may come to Android eventually, but the product didn't get where it is today because the goal was to make a good keyboard. The goal was to get user data, the ends to do that was with a good keyboard.
Allo appearing to be half assed is no doubt linked to the same mentality. The goal wasn't to make the end all be all of messaging clients, the goal probably was to try to break into the space of these 3rd party messaging apps that hide user data behind encrypted messages. If it looks like it's a Me Too app that's because it was created to be a Me Too app.
Contradictory. Yes, the goal is get user data, so wouldn't making apps that people will want to use be a means of doing that? Google's track record of not sticking with one messaging solution effort doesn't really scream "They just want your data."

hey would be hard pressed to keep the average Android user if they kept making this kind of stuff and not delivering when Apple has been doing it for awhile. It's basically "Why would I switch to Android when this already works?" Google needs to come up with something that is an all in one so things get simpler.
i dont have any issues with my current messaging app. I just decided to give this a look. It's not a whole of skin off my back that this one lacks.

It tells me I am chatting by SMS for free but it doesn't really tie to my SMS? I sent a message from the Allo to an iphone user and he said it came in as normal.
I'm still confused at what this app supposed to do...

I also don't get why they are putting apps on Iphones.
Google has a lot of businesses, but the one that makes practically all of the money is advertising. Google doesn't care about Android vs. iOS, they care about collecting as much data on everyone as possible to maximize the amount of money they can make selling you to advertisers.
And I'm not trying to say that as a negative, that business model has lead to a lot of cool free stuff. But it's what motivates them so it's going to affect their actions.

Still doesn't explain why if the goal is for data collection why not make apps people actually want to use. I won't ever open allo again until they integrate SMS fully.

What is #Allo? A Google app that records every message you ever send and makes it available to police upon request.

Google Plus didn't beat Facebook, are you trying to tell me that getting user data and user engagement that they were losing to a 3rd party wasn't the goal of Google Plus?

most of me doesn't really care about that. i'm not a criminal and if it helps catch criminals i really dont care that my mundane daily messages can be intercepted.
but on the flip side i understand the worry this causes. it's a slippery slope for sure.

I wonder if Google turns your messages over to the FSB on request
Posted on 9/21/16 at 10:46 am to Pettifogger
BTW it's live on the app store now

When I first heard about this app I was pretty excited.
It really is fricking useless though without full SMS.

Google appears to claim SMS, but who knows. Guess I'll experiment.

Whatsapp has a billion users. No SMS. Useless?
I'm not saying Allo is great or it will get traction, but everybody hammering on it for no SMS are looking backwards IMO. SMS is fricking terrible. No read receipts, no text decoration or emojis for those into that sort of thing, group SMS is a "hack" that has never worked right. It is the worst possible platform for sending messages the way people do it today.

say for the sake of argument it works flawlessly with sms. how is it any different than hangouts or textra?

i agree completely. but are we at the point that we can do without it? i know i can, but what about when i want to communicate with my mom who is tech illiterate and uses the stock texting app on her phone?
