Once at an old job someone sent an email saying their Voice mail was broken. I logged into the avaya manager and checked the box that was unchecked.
Then I walked to their desk and asked if they could show me the issue. Before they touched the phone I said "wait" and I waved my hand over the phone in a jedi manner and said "ok, now try it"
It worked obviously and I walked away without saying anything.

I'm more on the programming side but i get asked all the time in the office about technical things because you know i'm I.T. So i walk over watch them do whatever they say their issue is only for it to magically begin working again. Makes me look smarter than i really am but i'll take it

This doesn't even make any sense as an insult.

I'm on the programming side as well. If someone (family) asks me a hardware or general IT issue I tell them that's not what I do.

What do you mean, aren't you supposed to be good with computers?!

No one in my family understands what I do. I had the comment the other day that they think I'm in the CIA.

We've had a couple with weird wifi adapter issues.
After leaving an office and booting up at home or another office - the wireless adapter has to be reset.
Frustrating

Yes, all the time. I usually just open a problem and let it work itself out....out of my queue that is.

Happens almost daily. I just tell them "the problem got scared when I showed up and it fixed it self". They get a chuckle, I get out the office, and then they like IT.

My family calls me Chandler because nobody knows what I do. My boss doesn't even understand fully what I do more than keep wheels turning metaphorically.

This ain’t IT related, but I can always remember being younger and having cars that always seemed to have smaller issues. Typically, if they didn’t park my car I’d ignore it until I could get to my dad and show him what was going on. Only to get in my car, and try to show him what was going on, only for it to never happen while he was with me

He would always laugh and say that the same exact thing used to happen to him when he was younger (his dad was a mechanic as well)

Part of the deal I guess

While the techno presence magical phenomenon does seem to be a thing, I'll throw this out there. When user complains it always does x when I do y z and q and you walk over and say show me they sometimes actually do y z and g. They sometimes subconsciously tweak what they're doing because their brain leaves autopilot temporarily so they can demonstrably show you what they're doing. Normally they might miss or skip a step while they're mindlessly performing a repetitive task.

I've solved my own problems so many times by going through the steps I would to show someone my problem and figured out the issue by preemptively explaining (to myself) what I'm doing and why. I also can't count the times I've been stuck trying to set up/fix/do something, brought up the type a new forum post, support ticket etc. Only to figure out the issue as I explain what I'm trying to do and all the things that I've done. I refuse to "I've tried nothing and I'm all out of options" and all to frequently I figure it out before I even submit.

I've been mostly on the support side (software support that is) for close to 20 yrs and this actually rings true somewhat for me. Some of my most difficult users have been developers or IT Mgmt that didn't understand how to install/uninstall software or simply refused to do it because that's not their job. They'll put in a ticket to have something installed and expect everyone to stop everything they're working on and come running to their issue.

Happens all the time. I call it the "father effect"

When I was a kid working on the farm with my dad, often something wouldn't behave right that I was dealing with, I'd ask my dad about the issue, and he would say "Show me". Then I would try to show him my issue, it worked/behaved like it should...EVERY damn time.

Same thing happens to me now when I have to jump into a workstation to look at a user reported issue. They go to show me the issue and it "self resolves".
