Europe will require USB-C chargers. Apple isn't happy

The European Union proposed new rules on Thursday that will make USB-C ports standard on smartphones, tablets, cameras, phones, portable speakers and handheld video game systems.
The move is a setback for Apple (AAPL), which uses its own "Lightning" port on the iPhone. While the new rules are years away from coming into force, Apple could be compelled to make changes to its signature product.
"European consumers were frustrated long enough about incompatible chargers piling up in their drawers. We gave industry plenty of time to come up with their own solutions, now [the] time is ripe for legislative action for a common charger," EU tech chief Margrethe Vestager said in a statement.
EU citizens own three mobile phone chargers on average, according to the European Commission, the bloc's executive arm. But 38% of consumers have not been able to charge their phone on at least one occasion because they didn't have the correct charger to hand.
Roughly €2.4 billion ($2.8 billion) is spent annually on standalone chargers that do not come with electronic devices, according to the Commission.
European officials have been pushing the tech industry to standardize chargers for more than a decade. During that time, the number of mobile phone charging ports on the market has declined from 30 to three.
Apple said it would continue to "engage with stakeholders to help find a solution that protects consumer interest."
"We remain concerned that strict regulation mandating just one type of connector stifles innovation rather than encouraging it, which in turn will harm consumers in Europe and around the world," the company added in a statement.

If the iPhone 14 wasn't going to ditch the lightning port, I'm pretty sure this will just ensure that it happens. There is no need for lighting connector to exist at this point given most of the iPads and Macbook have already moved to USB-C.

Government shouldn’t be micromanaging tech like that.

Apple's exec's jobs are to make the company money, not make life easier for non Apple users. Consumers can vote with their feet. They're going to C anyway ( half my Apple shite uses C now, but that's besides the point). Euro trash bureaucrats have no business micro managing commerce and industry like that. What if they had said we prefer Apple's lighting and want everyone to switch to it. People would shite a brick...

I hate government nanny-stating more than I hate Apple's idiotic proprietary bullshite, but I hate them both. So bah, humbug, no matter who wins.

That's on them.
Ain't that hard to know which charger is the right one.

And what happens when USB-C is no longer the standard? Do we expect the dinosaur bureaucrats to be able to update those laws?
This is a very dumb idea.

It’s not just non-apple users that are screwed by the lightning ports. We have a variety of gadgets that most are on the USB-C except a few apple products. It’s sucks and wish apple would get their head out of their arse and do this on their own.

I don't understand this comment. How is forcing usb-c onto apple users make life easier for non-apple users? If anything all it does is make life easier for Apple users.

I agree it's time for Apple to go all in with C, still, it;s none of any Govt.s business to be micro managing shite like this.

Easy fix, just include a LC to USBC dongle with the iPhone

I don’t know why they would be THAT unhappy. We all know the iPhone is going to C at some point. Just do it already.
They should be glad it was C they chose anyway

Which is funny because Apple has really been at the forefront of incorporating USB-C into their devices. Hell, I had a MacBook from I think 2015 that was the first to roll out with it. Then it came to the iPad Pro. And that’s when I figured it would have a good chance to head to the iPhone. And here we are.

Ye it is, mostly for this very reason. Idiotic actually. A proposal for a law that won't be enacted for several years about tech that that is already on probably 70% of the mobile devices out there.

Have they created a market for dongles or something that makes a lot of money?

quote:well i havent read the exact law, and the title of the article might just be honing in on USBc because it tis the standard. I believe that manufacturers should be required to use the market standard. The market standard doesnt change THAT often. Where it would be a different plug every 5-10 years. to most people that 2 to 5 phones.

Is he wrong? The 12 inch Macbook was one of the first major launches with USB-C unless I'm missing something

Talk about a major government overreach for a very small inconvenience.

MacBook 2015 was the first notebook announced with USB-C, it featured no other ports aside from that single USB-C for all I/O including charging.
1 year later MacBook Pro was all USB-C, no other ports.
Unsurprisingly, as a manufacturer like Apple, known to have high attach rates and users with $$$, went USB-C exclusive on their notebooks, a huge market for USB-C products geared towards Apple users popped up quite early.

Lol Asia no one has Apple products. And they're quite a bit behind Samsung in EU and losing ground over the last year.
The Apple sheep thing is mostly just an unintelligent American thing for basics that cling to social media "coolness factor" while having little actual technical knowledge because they can't fathom trying other products. They are also usually the last to get new features often years behind others.
