on this board in the past, it has been a mix of many methods.

1. The iphone "Passwords" app.
2. As simple as a password protected xcell spreadsheet with all of them on it.
3. independent Password apps

Obviously with the way crypto can be stolen and the newest security tech being only temporary, what are the board's recs on keeping passwords in 2025?

I use 1Password, and I allow it to pick my password for every login I have.

As long as I remember my master password, or my face can be recognized, I'm good.

Your password is probably dstone12. Absolutely, absolutely not.

BitWarden is mine, but whatever you pick needs to work with the way you work, so you don't avoid using it. Use the random generators, and make your username anything but your email address when you can. I usually generate usernames based on what is within eyesight on my desk. Put rando stuff like, "HoppesAnker."

so no need to worry about bitwarden data breaches? not saying that there has been. but that is one of my questions.....

seems like eveyrthing is secure until a password provider has a data breach.

What actually happens is important. It's not just "breach." Did they steal customer keys? Leak the list of customer email addresses? etc. Your tradeoff is that we could tell you how to use a Keypass vault you carry around that only exists on a USB key you control, but you won't do it. I wouldn't.

Advantage of password vaults, it can auto-change a lot of passwords for you if you have the need. But you can't use a bad master password in any of them, and you may need to change it depending on your paranoia. As soon as you break the habit of using recurring pattern passwords (Banking2004!, Chase2004!, S3ptember1$, Sept3mber1$, etc.) across websites you will care much less.

Breaches shouldn’t matter if the vault is secure, everything will be encrypted via your master which would theoretically stay on your device.what does matter is that you change it soon after a breach is made public.
Nobody stores passwords remotely anywhere, just a hash. Now, if you have a really dumb password, then that hash may be brute forced back to text after a major breach and then be used to log into things.

Been using 1password for several years and am quite happy with it. Most importantly, my wife adapted to it and now has secure passwords, which is important since she does all the bills.

Is that a joke? They literally got taken for all of their user info(including hashes of masters), then lied about it until money started disappearing and the data was for sale. Lazy victims are still being victimized to the tune of $5mm more just last week. I guess you could argue that the concept at least held up and it would have been much worse if everything wasn’t properly encrypted.

printed out spreadsheet that is keep inside phone case with all your credit cards and drivers licences. Wait thats my brother.

I actually use a proton email that is not tied to anything at all. it has one email in draft with all my pw in a code method. Must use my decoder ring to solve.

I am not to keen on Password apps as it is a single point of failure. I do have one on phone as a decoy.

Didn't know this

Probably the reason they recently did an "update" to require more authentication

1Password mostly but I’m down with the Excel file only on laptop password protected. Hell of a lot harder to hack this one laptop and figure out this one spreadsheet then hacking 1Password.

Security through obscurity.

the issue with that is there is no redundancy. you're fricked if that storage drive dies or if something happens to the laptop.

Would you dare print it and hide it?
