Any got a recommendation for a radar detector?
Price really doesn’t matter but would like to keep it under $500 but if the best costs more than that, I would like to know.

This really is the best route to go.

Waze does nothing for less populated areas. It's not an option for everyone.
There are a few really good detectors brands these days because the technology the police use hasn't changed in a long time. Best bang for your buck out the top of the line companies: Valentine, Uniden, or Escort. These companies run specials from time to time.

Obligatory:
I'm on team waze as well.
For the poster saying Waze isn't that reliable in less populated areas; I'd questions the reliability of a radar detector in those areas as well. Cops on the side of the road will often pick and choose when to use the radar to avoid registering on radars. Watch enough cars drive down the road, you can probably tell when someone is doing 70+ in a 50.

I bought a Uiden R3 a couple of years ago before I went on a eastern seaboard trip, TN-MA , I used WAZE the entire time and I can say with confidence that I would depend on the R3 more than WAZE. The range on even a $300 radar detector is amazing. If i had to pick WAZE or a detector I would choose detector. My advice is to run both.

I’ve used Waze for years and agree that it’s good but it has some faults- less populated areas and sometimes the app is glitchy
I’d not replace my Waze app for a radar detector. I’d run both since Waze is best around for laser.
i looked into the Valentine and that’s getting some really good reviews. A bit pricey but probably money well spent if it works like it’s reported

Uniden R8 and use Waze in conjunction with it.
I've owned a V1 and V1G2. Uniden is more custom friendly without the use of a phone (in order to really customize a V1 and V1G2.
That said, the R8 just received Bluetooth capability through a firmware update allowing you to use Highway Radar (Android only for now) if you want to pair and use your phone to change its settings.
Detection wise, R8 has better detection on Ka band, especially 35.5 frequency over the V1G2, and it edges out the V1G2 on 34.7 as well.
K-band --- V1 used to be the winner by a mile, but with so much filtering these days, the V1 and V1G2 aren't what they used to be with K band. Granted, we don't see a lot of it around here anymore, but there are some low powered K band guns around --- Maurepas, LA is an example, as well as the town of Livingston. I like the R8 here because you can filter out K-band signals that aren't actually police radar.
X band, not really in use here. Except for Hammond, LA. Odd, I know.

vortexradar.com is a great site with recommendations to suit most people. He also has a lot of youtube vids and does great testing.

It's an all in approach. Waze AND a Radar detector as well as your eyeballs. The cheapest I'd go is the Uniden R3.
I can't tell you how many times it's saved me from a ticket when there is no waze markers in the area. Sure there are plenty of cops who are hunters. But most aren't. Most just keep the KA band on and drive around because it's too easy to just catch unaware people. Many cops also are very aware of the dead zones in coverage and will sit there. Luckily there are complete idiots who think they can just run 100+ mph straight through areas so you can use them for a bit to run a decoy for you as well.

I use the WAZE app in conjunction with an Escort 360c Max mkII. Detection always seems to work; however I still only drive 3-8mph over the limit depending where I am. Places like Georgetown, Olla, Tullos I will drive 2 mph UNDER the radar as those LEO's will write anyone a ticket.

Waze works really well and costs nothing.

I use both Waze and an Escort MAX 360c.
Waze is very good, but I have been saved by my radar detector numerous times when Waze showed nothing.
I love my Escort MAX 360c. I have no complaints about it at all.
I think you should use both.

I have a cheap uniden DFR7 with GPS. I turned everything off except K band. It's saved me plenty of times. I was going to get a V1. No need to because my cheap one works. No false alerts either. If it's beeping there's fuzz somewhere.

Waze doesn't work on back roads where some tax collector is sitting over a hill waiting for you.
