Wife and I expecting first child and I’ve been asked to pick the video monitor to put on our registry.

Wife wants a handheld monitor with a screen separate from her phone, but I want an app so we can watch from anywhere.

Do any products offer both?

No, but I highly recommend the Nest (indoor or outdoor). They're super fast to load and you can watch from anywhere.
We had a traditional baby monitor right when we had our 1st kiddo but did not like it.

All of my buddies have ones that do video and audio. They have tablet-sized screens that connect to the house wifi, and they can walk around the house and view them. Pretty neat stuff

We have a Motorola monitor, they suck... screen is blurry, range is terrible. If it was $50 sure whatever but they are ridiculously overpriced.

We went with Foscam IP cameras. Can view them anywhere on our wifi, they have audio but we also use some cheap audio only monitors.

Ok, went with a standard video baby monitor that has HD video, temperature readings, two-way audio, etc. It doesn’t rely on Wifi and has 700 ft. range, which is fine. That is what my wife wanted, a monitor to prop up on the table downstairs to watch while the baby sleeps that isn’t her phone. Relatively affordable model since it doesn’t have crazy lenses, super long range, or wifi capable. Hopefully someone will buy it for us.

For my needs, I just bought a SimpliCam to go with my pre-existing SimpliSafe alarm system. I’ll put it up in the far top corner of the nursery so I can see everything going on in there from my phone at all times. It was $75 on eBay, as opposed to $100 on their website. Not too bad for high quality security camera that will integrate with pre-existing system perfectly.

Can only share my experience.

We got one and I think it's still in the box somewhere. We just used the old school audio monitor.

This is what we did. Use an old tablet to view it. I also have it configured so that it is viewable outside of our home wifi.

We went with the Infant Optics DXR-8. I have no idea how well it will actually work, but initial tests and playing with it at day/night seem good so far. If I see this thread pop up in a week or two, I will update on how well it works. 20,000 reviews and 4.5 stars, so it must be decent.

When we hire a nanny in August, I think I am going to expand my Nest Cameras around the house. For liability reasons and peace of mind.

I have a nest cam and a dedicated baby monitor. They each have their pros and cons.

If you plan on (or already are) invested in the nest ecosystem, than go with a nest. I have the camera, thermostat and just added the smoke detector. I’ll probably add the doorbell camera soon.

Check out Wyze cam. Full HD, two way audio, night vision, movement alerts, smoke alarm, CO alarm. Only $20. I have two and they work great so far.

I did the same. I have 6 cameras throughout the inside to watch the nanny

Most common areas are visible (for liability)

I also watch my wife get dressed

I feel like I’m very late to this thread, but our set up is a NestCam up in the corner and a super cheap audio only monitor.

The audio monitor let’s us know if she waking up and sort of grunting etc, and then we can pull up the nest app to see what’s going on. It’s worked well for us with both our kids.

I spent a lot of time 3 years ago researching this and most of the options just suck or don't have the things you want.

What I went with worked well. I went with a really nice audio baby monitor that had sleep monitoring and all that built in. Being just audio, it was a lot cheaper but still had as good or better features than the video ones on the market.

For video, I got an old iphone and got an app call cloud baby monitor that had a lot of great features in it as well. Mounted the old iphone over my kids bed and then downloaded the app on my phone as well.

Honestly the audio monitor is what I used the most. Get one that has lights on it that respond to sound in the other room. That visual sign also comes in handy.

We've had a motorola for over a year and it's been great. If you're getting a video/audio one then it's best capability should be the quality of night time video. All baby devices pick up sound well. We only have to keep ours on 2 levels above off. To us it always seemed like devices that streamed to an app were pointless. There's never been a point where we put her down that we go so far away from her the tablet can't get signal. Our motorola one has an app to watch the video from the phone, but I only used it once when we got it.

I’ve got a 2 week old at home, my first, and decided to go with the Arlo baby, partly because I’ve used other Arlo cameras. It doesn’t have a dedicated monitor yet, but supposedly they are making one. However, with the app, you can use your phone, an iPad, an android device, anything that can run the app as a monitoring device. This does depend on your Wi-Fi network/internet connection. The amazon echo show can also be used as a monitor.

From my experience with it, there’s typically about a 1-2 second delay, two way sound, nightlight, night vision, plays lullabies/white noise or your own recordings, monitors temperature, humidity, air quality (I don’t know the metrics for this), and has legit 1080p video quality. It also has motion and sound alerts as well.

When the connection was spotty a few days ago, it was frustrating, but otherwise it has been good. You can also have the audio monitoring stay active with your device on standby. If/when they come out with a dedicated monitor that is not reliant on the internet, that would be killer.

I bought the iBaby M6T camera. It has night vision, two way audio, plays music, gives temperature and humidity in the room. It also has the ability to rotate 360 degrees and pan up and down. I prefer a wifi camera because I travel can see my girl at night just for peace of mind and to enjoy seeing her sleep. I had it on my registry but got the lower model and decided to upgrade to the one i bought. Mine was $199.

All in all, I like it but i think the Nest indoor can do everything you want it to for a little cheaper. The only downside to the Nest camera is it can't rotate and pan the room which you need to decide if thats useful. It is if you want to keep it around when she starts walking and wanders around her room during the night.

After making my post, I decided to look into the monitor for the Arlo Baby. I guess, a month or two ago, they announced via some community forum that they were no longer going to put out a monitor because tablets such as the Amazon fire tablets worked so well with it. I downloaded the app onto my old fire tablet and it does work nicely. Because they are on the same Wi-Fi network, it does not need the internet to communicate, so it does function as a direct monitor. I’m puzzled as to why my phone doesn’t do the same, as my phone is also on the same network.
