At midnight this past Sunday, AT&T announced it would be bringing its Gigapower internet service to Kansas City, offering to match exactly the price and speed offered by Google Fiber. For $70 per month, customers can get connectivity of 1 gigabit per second, and for $120 they get a basic TV package as well. The rollout highlights how increasing competition is benefitting consumers. After the arrival of Google Fiber, the dominant player in Kansas City, Time Warner, has tripled its speeds without raising prices.

Now the question is will they do this in other cities proactively or will they wait for Google Fiber to come in and force their hand. Somehow I think it will be the latter.

I love what T-Mobile and Google Fiber are doing to shake up the cell phone and ISP industries. frick the fat lazy incumbents.

Will they still be connecting to houses with coax or phone line? Isn't that where the bottle neck will occur?

Is there any Federal Law stating that they have to offer that price to other customers? I'd love to get some discounts in Houston!

AT&T Gigapower is fiber to the premises.

Also, it's worth pointing out that AT&T's price match has a catch: You have to let them track your browsing habits.

AT&T says it tracks "the webpages you visit, the time you spend on each, the links or ads you see and follow, and the search terms you enter... AT&T Internet Preferences works independently of your browser's privacy settings regarding cookies, do-not-track, and private browsing. If you opt-in to AT&T Internet Preferences, AT&T will still be able to collect and use your Web browsing information independent of those settings."

quote:

"Using the IP address assigned to each GigaPower account, AT&T scans for your AT&T Internet Preferences election," the company says. "AT&T will treat your Internet browsing activity in accordance with your election. If you chose to participate in the AT&T Internet Preferences program, your Internet traffic is routed to AT&T's Internet Preferences web browsing and analytics platform. If you chose not to participate in the AT&T Internet Preferences program, your Internet traffic is not routed to the Internet Preferences analytics platform. AT&T may collect and use web browsing information for other purposes, as described in our Privacy Policy, even if you do not participate in the Internet Preferences program."

It's an extra $29 a month if you opt out of being tracked.

Nothing says a company was taking advantage over a regulated monopoly like matching a competitor's better offer

Wonder what's to stop them from tracking you even if you opt out and pay the extra money?

well they can still see what you are doing..... the content goes from you to the ISP to the VPN to the place the content exists. VPNs dont bypass the ISP from what i understand.

No, you can't bypass your ISP, and at the very least the ISP will know that you are using a VPN and they can see your encrypted traffic. I suppose they could also possibly intercept the initial handshake with your VPN and execute a man in the middle attack, allowing them to spy on you anyway with neither you nor the VPN knowing about it.

ATT is already doing this in the Austin area.

Google fiber has the same conditions with their tracking of internet usage.

Once Competition came to Austin, both ATT Uverse and TimeWarner upped there standard package to include 1Gb speeds.

Link?

Obviously, Google has many many other ways to track and learn everything about you regardless of your ISP, but I do not see anything indicating they do something at the ISP level that Cox, Comcast, etc. don't do already.
