Are laptops with good batteries a thing?

Opened my laptop up at 5:45am central and am already down to 25%. I'll be needing an electrical outlet in 30 minutes. Even laptops that advertise good batteries seem to wane shortly after purchase. Anyone have any luck on this front?

The new Apple Laptops with the M1 chip have pretty insane battery life

Get the thinkpad t580 with an internal battery and a removable battery, then buy the extended removable battery. Mine last around 15 hours and is a beast of a laptop spec wise.
I dont think they make them like this anymore so you may have to go used.

We (humans) can create technology that allows astronauts to live in space for months at a time (among other things, i.e. engines), yet phone or laptop batteries will die in less than 4 hours. It's crazy.

I run at three pegs down, whatever that means.

Why not be plugged in? Just for the sake of not being plugged in?
On battery, everything runs slower to save power anyway. Why not make full use of the processing power?

My wife (no pics) and I have HP laptops and the batteries in both are much better than expected.

Some tips
- turn down the brightness
- unplug anything you don't need from USB
- is your wifi signal crappy?
- turn off bluetooth or any other connections
- are you running heavy programs like photo editing, games, etc?
- plug it in. Carry charger with you everywhere.

I don't need extra power for spreadsheets and email. Plus leaving it plugged it drains the battery.

Laptop batteries all start out fine. But most retain theie performance much longer if you don't leave them plugged in all the time.
However, even the best ones will only last 2-3 years. Most are not hard to change yourself. Watch a YouTube video and order a new one - that's my advice.
When the new one is installed, plug it in less often and it will last longer.

My MacBook can go a few days without a charge

It's really not crazy. The additional costs for increased battery life in a consumer product is generally considered not worth the increased spec. If you have to tack on a 30% price increase to get a couple of hours of battery life, you can see why some companies would sacrifice the battery life when most people are always around a power source.

You have to balance the ill effects of charge cycles against keeping it fully charged.
Most new(er) laptops have a setting in the power/battery management settings for the battery charge threshold settings for primarily plugged-in laptops.
