Man getting Belgium in 2nd round is not something I wanted to see waking up this morning. They put on a clinic against New Zealand. We will have to be highly organized in the back and make 0 mistakes.

Silly question but is that a lock at this stage? I know there are only 6 matches left so not sure if we are dialed into that outcome.

In the BBC live update link it says “as it stands” currently:

LINK

I believe the only portion that can change is Belgiums opponent being S Korea- unfortunately I think Belgium is locked in.

We went from everyone talking about a dream path to the quarterfinals and that if Uruguay upset Spain yesterday we would even have the most favorable path to the semis possible (to be fair nobody was saying we were going to make the semis)

To now our path is Bosnia, Belgium, Spain, France, Argentina

This game against Bosnia is going to be one of the biggest matches USMNT ever plays. All the hype and success from the last 3 weeks would go right down the shitter

Beating Belgium wouldn’t require a miracle like it would against most of the other Euro powerhouses, but it would require a near perfect game from us with perhaps Lady Luck being on our side. It would be disappointing to be eliminated in round of 16 but it wouldn’t be completely melt worthy like a loss to Bosnia would

With how our defense set up, we will need to score 3 goals to beat Belgium
But let's worry about beating Bosnia first
I knew it was looking too easy early on, but beating Belgium is an easier achievement than France or Spain.

How did the #2 path in our group shake out?

I remember listening to clips before the cup started on YT and it seemed the #2 team in our group had an easier projected path than the winner. I just haven't looked to see if reality unfolded in the same way

Paraguay opens with Germany so I think #1 in our group was the play

Australia gets Egypt then Argentina. Looking much past that seems silly. So i don't really see much difference, I'd take our draw for the first next two games.

paraguay in 3rd got paired with Germany in R32 and France in R16. Australia got the better shake. At least have a shot against Egypt in R32 before getting Argentina in R16

ETA oh if comparing to US then we definitely have the better shake. Should’ve worked out we got easiest path to QF but Egypt fricked us and now Argentina have easiest path

Yet they only managed ties against Egypt and Iran.

While I agree to an extent, only making it to the round of 16 on home soil with a talented generation of players in their prime would be really disappointing. We almost always make the R16. Are we any different than we ever were? We need to make the QF for this to be a success.

They have only looked good in one match so far. Definitely beatable.

And it was primarily in the second half against a bad New Zealand squad.

This ain’t the 2018 Belgium team. In their last two WC appearances they are 2-3-1. Wins over Canada and New Zealand, and a loss to Morocco.

It's wild all the games are stacked in the late afternoon-night windows on a sat where everyone in Europe could watch games comfortably if we started at 12 or even 2.

Oh well, I'll be at the Austria/Algeria game tonight in KC, hopefully both teams will try to win instead of settling for a draw to advance. And the thunderstorms hold off.

ETA just looked and it appears Algeria is currently the first 3rd place team out, they're definitely gonna go for it tonight.

Who is scheduling these games? Weekday games? Let's run those from 11AM to 1AM. Weekend games? Start those at 4PM and end by 10:30PM.

Belgium isn’t some unbeatable juggernaut like some of the other euro teams. Thinking we’d have to play perfect against them is laughable.

Belgium would be favored but that isn’t a David vs Goliath matchup in any way shape or form
