Just got home from work and rewatched the game. What an absolute tactical disasterclass by Tuchel. Why in the actual frick are you going to a back 6 with 30+ minutes left, they just gave the ball to Argentina and said frick it lol, they had 12, TWELVE % possession after Tuchel subbed.

Tuchel should be sacked. I don’t even watch that much soccer but even I know trying to protect a 1-0 lead by parking the bus for an entire half against Lionel fricking Messi is egregious. What did he think was going to happen? You have a bunch of elite players and were the better team for 60 minutes, you should have just kept pressing the advantage instead of playing with fire. Guess he got too much inside his own head especially after Mexico.

Good. England, they can all show the English Flag at the Olympics, but when citiziens fly it in their country they get confiscated and ticketed.

Argentina dominated possession for the first half and even up to the point England scored. England hardly touched the ball. Anthony Gordon was gassed and had to come off. What game were you watching?

Argentina dominated possession for the first half and even up to the point England scored
1st half possession was England 44%, Argentina 56%
Possession up to the 60th minute was England 47%, Argentina 53%
Possession after England’s goal was England 12%, Argentina 88%
What game were you watching?

He may as well have just put all ten England players on the goal line with Pickford in front

From the moment Gordon scored to the moment he was subbed off, Argentina had 88% possession. Tuchel had to make a change and if you think he could have stopped what was coming with different subs, you’re kidding yourself

What a goal post move from you
You said Argentina dominated possession in the first half and up to the point England scored. I simply showed you that you were completely incorrect and possession domination did not happen until England scored and Tuchel started his subs

From 330 - 4 PM yesterday Messi had my jaw on the floor.
England's prevent play had me screaming at my television. What are you doing?
Bring Saka and Rashford on to drive the ball down the field, win fouls, and relieve pressure. In a WC semifinal you play prevent defense against Argentina? England deserve to go out for that alone.

Another side note. What in the world are the players doing?
The IQ on the field for those England players alone is astronomical. You have players from Bayern Munich, Real Madrid, Man City, Arsenal, etc.
How does that collective group not realize this isn't working and try something different. You can't just listen to coach tactics 100% if you are on the field seeing that it is not working. Shame on some of those players as well.

Yep. They needed a pressure reliever. The whole rest of the game was played around their box.

The domination was already happening before the substitutions.
And Argentina was clearly the better team in the first half

Idk what the frick Tuchel was doing.
He was thinking "we have a lead and can play great defense. It'll take at least a few perfect opportunities and finishes to beat us."
The problem is with Messi on the field, he'll generate at least three or four perfect opportunities per half... and he did.

The "domination" happened because England inexplicably stopped playing after the goal. To try and claim any superiority before that is laughable. They hadn't created so much as a half chance before England's goal and as has already been pointed out possession was close. Of course, neither team had much possession or opportunity because Argentina spent the first quarter of the game doing nothing but fouling.

They held a 3% advantage. Not dominating possession.

The problem is it was immediately clear that it wasn't working. Argentina had created absolutely nothing before the England goal. Once they put 10 behind the ball had like 5-6 serious warning shots before the goal and wasted a hydration break and multiple subs to change course and they never did. In fact, they just got more and more negative. Coaches usually get too much praise and too much criticism but in this case it is all warranted. I say this as someone whose club Tuchel delivered a Champions League to but that was as an egregious display of mismanagement as I've ever seen in sport.

Yes, but not before England scored. Up to that point England were the better team and deserved the lead. Argentina hadn’t done much at all.
After the goal England went into a defensive shell and were in straight up survival mode, which is crazy. What they were doing was working and kept Argentina from pressing too high.
England’s best chance was to keep attacking and try to win 2-1 or 3-2. Thinking they could hold a 1 goal lead was asinine. Argentina ALWAYS finds a way to net at least one.

I’m not sure how you can claim this.

You can’t go into a defensive shell and expect it to hold up for 30 plus minutes.
It’s just target practice. That only works for 10 minutes.
It’s a prevent defense so to speak. It nearly costs nfl teams all the time
