The time to leak/subsequently announce what will be a wildly unpopular move with the public is not when the same public that will be shredding them is already assembled

No - I don't think it is. Berhalter was already making 4-5x more than the USWNT coach. No national team is paying their coach $15M a year. The highest paid is somewhere around $5M but most are closer to $3M a year. If you're a coach that wants to be rich you coach a club team.
