We still have 7 matches left after we play Mexico
Sure, but and 4 of them are on the road, which is why need to win that Mexico game because we already have to make up points for dropping this game. Lose at home to Mexico and we'd have to make up even more on the road.

we only have a 12% magic number to be eliminated as of now. if we can get 3 points against Mexico in november, it’s essentially sealed.
we also really, really need to take care of bidness against the ticos wednesday

What I’ve been saying:
Three Takeaways
quote:
The bigger problem, to me, is that Berhalter shoehorned sweeping personnel changes into the exact same tactical shape and outlook as before, and apparently expected it to work roughly as well as before. The US utilized multiple formations to win the Gold Cup, driven by the reality that not every attacker can be Christian Pulisic, not every defensive midfielder can do what Tyler Adams does – that roles should suit players just as much as vice versa.
quote:
It may be true that the 4-3-3 usually sets up Berhalter’s top 14 or so players for success. It does not necessarily do so for players 15-30 or so, and this game is another data point in that trend.
Three Takeaways

It’s not Berhalter’s fault the players didn’t execute the plan.
Uh. It kinda is.
Uh. My post was a joke. The line of ????? in the synopsis of berhalter’s plan was the punchline.

We should give Miroslav Klose a look after we fire GGG.

I watched all 90 minutes of that shite and still have no idea what our plan was in attack. We have seen this time and time again - no ideas on the ball, no quick one twos, no desire to try to break the other team down. Everyone running away from the ball when someone was carrying it up the field in the MF. We booted so many long balls to nobody I wanted to throw shite at my TV. And this is after a game where we had success with people checking back and combining with runners from deep to spring attacks. Frustrating.

Just think about this sub and you'll get more pissed. Putting in Roldan instead of giving Hoppe a run out
His fascination with certain players is frustrating as frick.

Jesus I was too pissed at the overall play to even think about that. Also I found it strange how high up the field Lletget was at times after Aaronson came on

While I don't think it was a great tactical set-up or line-up, I do agree with Greg's decision to not go all out against Panama. These three game windows are tough, and playing in Panama in that heat will sap you. Better to get you the full 6 in the other two games, and try to scrape a win or grind out a draw against Panama. Didn't happen, but we're already missing out on first choice attackers, so putting in the 2nd/3rd choice guys for an away qualifying match was going to be difficult anyway.
The tactics/formation were wrong on top of it all.

We like to pretend we have an outside shot at a WC title in 2026 yet it's 2021 and we're still going on the road in CONCACAF with the "get a draw" mentality. No reason we shouldn't have started our best available for both panama and Costa Rica.
Posted on 10/11/21 at 12:01 pm to Ssubba
I don't think that was the mentality last night.
That team we put on the field last night was more talented than Panama's. But the players weren't up for it and we got outcoached, which is sad because it's not like Panama put together some tactical masterclass, their only real chances were when we made stupid giveaways. They weren't even really pressuring the ball and we still were losing it. And their one goal came on a fricking olimpico.
We've been talking since 2018 how we have all this depth, but last night said otherwise. Everyone is concerned about Gregg playing the wrong players last night, but I'm more concerned that we only have like 10-12 players we can apparently trust in important matches.
I'm sorry, I don't care how young they are, you can't expect guys coming off of matches with their clubs to play three matches in 7 days and then send them back to their clubs where they will jump right back into the season.
That's just not feasible.
The good news is that the November window is just two matches.

I was going to write a novel but I'm not going to waste my time on Gregg. His biggest issues came to head in 1 match last night. Roster selection, substitution pattern and tactics. After the first 15 minutes I texted my friend and said "this guy has the smartest man in the room syndrome". He clearly thought he can play "his way" with those players and that pitch. An average manager will change his formation and style to suit the players available. Gregg, nope......and that's a sign of a manager that is in over his head. Too bad we don't have the support to sing "you don't know what you're doing" all match vs. CR because clearly he does not.

We already knew he’s been trying to fit a square peg into a round hole with this player pool and his tactics
In the Gold Cup he actually adapted his tactics and it worked
But he’s back to the same old shite

This was my concern about this window. Without pulisic and Reyna and brooks (who has had his issues for us to be sure) do we really have enough guys that can score and/or control a game. I really like our best 15/16 guys but after that the depth gets theoretical real quick.
I mean hell for all the depth and golden generation talk, if an 18 year old mls striker picked Mexico instead of us 60 days ago we’d be in legit trouble right now.

I think a formation like this would score 2-3 against Costa Rica:
quote:
Aaronson-Pepi-Hoppe
Musah-McKennie
Adams
A.Robinson-Zimmerman-M.Robinson-Dest
Turner
Then we could sub into a 4-5-1, or a 5-4-1 with our MLS depth, absorb attacks, and see the match out.

That would be my same guess of what our roster looks like Wednesday. Maybe McKenzie in the back over zimmerman.
And that lineup should get the win we need.

Under the argument of this board - impossible that Musah plays again - not humanly possible to start someone in all three games
Same for Zimmerman.
And under that logic if we are going to burn Adam’s by playing him a half - why not start him to continue atleast some of the continuity that was built in second half against jamaica
