But it is. The strict scrutiny just means you don’t get away with anything.

Even if it’s just a toe.

I don’t think the spirit of the offsides rule is that it should be measured with lasers down to the centimeter I also don’t have a fair solution to offer and it seems like most people are fine with it, so I understand why it is the way it is. I just think it’s kinda stupid.

I think this is fair. Colombia just had a goal disallowed due to a toenail. For the casual viewer, the optics are terrible, but it is what it is.

There’s not a linesman on god’s green earth that would have had the flag up for Colombia’s goal tonight or Iran’s goal last night

I think you could find a lot of rules in sports that if applied with laser precision would change the results of games and seeding.

It’s just weird that a sport can be so casual with so much of the technicalities and be so rigid about something like this

It should be where the hips are. There's no advantage having your toe ahead if your hips are behind the defender like Colombia was.

Well I was a goalkeeper, so the strict application of offsides BY RULE was absolutely to my benefit lol.

It’s any part of the body you could legitimately score with.

There is a new interpretation of the offside rule (the Wenger rule, after former Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger) where offside will not be called unless the entire attacker’s body is offside when the ball is played. If there is any crossover, they will be deemed onside.

This change cannot come soon enough. I think it’s the best compromise.

Would seriously favor offense.

And people bitch about how often pass interference is called these days in football

I think this would be a good start.

Unlike American football (at the college level), soccer needs more offense.

I’m not so sure it does. Good defense is very much a part of good soccer.

Like I’m sure some folks thought Cabo Verde surviving Spain was boring. I wasn’t one of them. Was good soccer on both sides, just on different sides of the ball.

If you are referring to Colombia’s goal at the end it was called by the linesman.

You make this rule change it’ll only further unbalance the game in favor of the haves rather than the have nots.

If it makes the game even easier to watch, I don't have a problem with it.

I'm not an auto-underdog-rooter. I usually like the best of the best in any sport.

To be sure, it's not true in all cases, but I find most underdog-rooting to be tied to an inferiority complex.

I honestly disagree, I think the scoring is good where it is. Soccer games don’t last four hours like college football, so less scoring is fine.

I’d rather see more goals from formerly offside passes and less from penalties though.

I have 0 issue with a 0-0 draw, provided the soccer is good.

I do like the idea that games are 2 hours mostly in real time. But it does need more scoring. Not a ton but more would be best. This is not debatable but a fact.

I don't know what that is.

My statement on underdog rooters stands.
