There's a difference and most of it is more difference of opinion, though based on a knowledge of the game.

Theres plenty of stuff I read on the Rant and Saints Talk that I question if the author has ever seen a football before.

For this site at least, Knowledge =/= Power.

Anyways, thanks to the Soccer Board for entertaining my musings here.

I don't know much about soccer and have asked a lot of random questions on this board. Everyone answered me and were very cool about it! Sorry you had a bad experience

in addition to everything that has been said so far on why some new fans are annoying as shite, ill add the "who is this bradley guy and why is he on the field?" and the "this bradley guy is supposed to be good?" shite.

And then my counter-argument for that would be why doesn't baseball get labeled as a "pansy" sport? (And I say this even thought baseball is my favorite sport)

When is the last time you heard someone comment about how "pretty" a double play in baseball was. And I know Americans don't say this, but today I was listening to a game with British announcers, and someone apparently served up a "youthful" cross.

That's kinda gay by American standards, would you not agree? Doesn't mean it actually is gay or you have to think so, but there is plenty reason its thought of different than baseball.

And posters on the recruiting board talk about boners and beating off when a 17 year old says he's coming to LSU

Yeh thats completely unique to soccer. If a mediocre player(by international standards) shits the bed really really badly in the bigger stretch of games all year, he's going to get a lot of flack regardless of the sports. Quit acting like soccer is the only sport where people make comments about players without a rational consideration of their full body of work.

Yeah, they are joking dude. Kind of creepy that they care that much, but they are not serious. So no parallel at all. Even if that was relevant, its just message board posters. I know nobody who says any of that in real life. I know plenty who call soccer buildups pretty frequently.

I hear them do this all the time in every sport.

no one is saying it's unique to soccer. at all. if you came into a game 5 nba finals thread and started questioning "that tim duncan guy" or really any of the 8-9 elite players that were on the floor, everyone would tell you to STFU and GTFO. just like what is happening to the idiots questioning michael bradley.

if someone came into the nba finals thread and was like, "why doesnt someone just stand under the basket on one end the whole game?" they would get destroyed for being fricking idiots.

but for some reason, when actual soccer fans call these new fans retarded for suggesting bigger goals or removing offside, they band together and get all pissy acting like the fans of the game are the idiots.

You are being dishonest. Look, its perfectly fine to not care which adjectives are used to describe it. And I don't think soccer is gay. But don't act like other sports use words like "pretty" anywhere close to as frequently as soccer.

Oh ok gotcha Thats fair and its true that sometimes those fans are lumped in with the insufferable ones who act as gatekeepers for soccer and think its far too complicated for anyone who never played to understand enough to form valid observations on it.

I guess there were some of both on this thread.

Apples and oranges. No offsides isn't a parallel to that. Offsides can be a necessary rule without having to make ridiculous comparisons to a linebacker lining offsides in football(like others on this thread).

I was sitting at the bar in Chilis the other day at lunch conversing with another guy about the game on when we were told by another gentlemen very condescendingly "I bet you two have never seen a match before today."

This person is an a-hole who just so happens to be a soccer fan. Please don't group us in with these types.

So a word of advice to long time soccer fans: When a new soccer fan, or someone gaining interest because of the World Cup, comes along and gets excited about it, don't be an a-hole about it. If they have questions on how the game works, answer them. Encourage their understanding.

If you look at how most people new to this board are received, people who genuinely want to learn rather than troll, they are very well received. I don't know any other board that's as welcoming, to be honest. We're pretty harsh towards trolls though.

My Facebook news feed is littered with "where were all you people when we were excited about soccer years ago?" posts

Why are you friends with so many assholes? I haven't seen this from any of my soccer-loving facebook peeps.

No. You really don't. And the legitimacy of soccer doesn't depend on you making a stand for soccer not using the word "pretty" more than other sports, so you can stop embarrassing yourself.

You've never hear someone call a football pass pretty or call a curveball pretty? I've heard both numerous times

Yes you do.. and I couldn't care less if they use the word pretty before every other word in a soccer broadcast, since I'm not trying to defend the legitimacy of soccer...

you aren't insightful or clever, just another idiot who believes they are, regardless of what sport you like..
