He is not doing this at all.

Seriously, people need to read the actual LA Times article.

I don't think he's making it about him again. He's just an honest guy. He's been fine on ESPN and that FIFA commercial was excellent. I just think it was odd to hear that from someone who has been the face of US Soccer. That's my only takeaway.

I read it. Yes he said it was "for a second" and yes it's natural however he should know that the only thing usmnt espn will be talking about is Landon Donovan. Which on my drive this morning was all I heard. After advancing from group (and really after the good Portugal showing without altidore) everything about Donovan had died down. He was just another commentator.

Commercials, interviews, commenting. Of course it's about him.
Landon is welcome to feel bitter, but nothing he's done since being left off makes me think it wasn't always about him.

What? ESPN hasn't really made anything of the Donovan omission since the World Cup started.

What is wrong with him doing any of this?

That's a hell of a conclusion you got there from a guy making fun of himself in commercials and signing on to be a World Cup analyst.

If Jurgen brought Landon to Brazil, we would be having the same exact type of conversation, but we'd just be talking about "Why isn't Landon Donovan starting?"

If Jurgen felt that if he brought Donovan he had to start Donovan to keep pressure off of the team, wouldn't that change opinions about whether or not it was the right move?

How is that any different than somebody asking in a thread if Julian Green should start?

That's the point. Until he did this the story was dead. This morning now it's all the talking heads are talking about at least on the radio. He made it about him again instead of the usmnt.

I'm guessing he didn't pick up the phone and call the LA Times and say "Hey, let's talk about me for a minute."

Because Julian Green doesn't bring a pedigree of general success behind him. Landon is a veteran, a great one, whose best days are behind him, so you're tying in nostalgia, and an biased perspective on whether or not he would actually deserve a spot in the lineup, and then dropping that debate right in front of whoever he might start over.

If sabbaticals were normal and athletes took them all the time, there might a better argument. But his dedication can be questioned simply based on that fact alone. Therefore, if you bring him, you wouldn't start him, then the question begins.

Bringing Landon and using as a sub (which obviously would have helped, especially after Jozy went down) would have caused infinitely less controversy than not bringing him in the first place.

Landon's first touch is so far and ahead anyone else we have ever produced that I am still shocked that Jurgen does not rate him higher. It was beyond apparent that he could do things no one else on our team could do even the first team I watched the US play, and I am not talking about skills that have waned. We are certainly in a position where his first touch and creativity would have been helpful.

I would have been super butthurt if we did bring any of our critical pieces to the World Cup in Howard, Dempsey, Bradley, Jozy, Fabian, Jones, Cameron, Besler, or Donovan. It just really stung that it was also my favorite player.

Then why call him back for the Gold Cup (where he was the best player), start him in our two biggest WCQ's (where he was the best player) and have him captain the 2014 January camp squad (where he was the best player)?

So Jonathan can tweet about how he didn't make the squad, duh.

That feeling about as human as it gets, not a big deal at all IMO.

He at least is being honest. If guys were honest all the time, this would be a non-story as this happens probably all the time in all sports in all kinds of situations.

Bringing up dedication is a weak arse point when he has put in more work than anyone else for the USMNT. He has 156 caps, which is more than anyone at the entire World Cup (well, now Casillas hit 156 in Spain's three and out).

Dedication is irrelevant to bringing the best 23. If it mattered, then Timmy Chandler would have had his citizenship revoked.

Every argument that has been brought up since May has not made any since. And if you look one post down, there is a huge discussion going on about our woes on the left side of the midfield. If Donovan was part of the 23 in place of Brad Davis, that discussion probably would not be happening.

And I would not have been a huge a-hole for the past five weeks on here.

I really wish I was proven "wrong" on this and Brad Davis had gone out and set up three set piece goals with his magical left foot.
