I can't think of a single good reason why it's a good idea to bring an obviously inferior player over someone who does almost everything better. Not one.
This is just stupid. There are multiple examples of great players being left off of national/allstar teams because other players that are "lesser" do the things the star can't or refuses to do that makes the team better.
This isn't the Ryder Cup. Google Herb Brooks.
BTW, I don't think this is one of those times. Donovan makes the team better and is one of the star/best players. He wasn't left home to make the team better.
But I don't really give flying frick about the Landon Donovan snub. I understand the fanbois getting their nickers in a twitch over it, but frick you pissed off the new coach at exactly the wrong time and essentially tried to blow it off as not a big deal.
This isn't fricking rocket science. These aren't teenage girls. Jurgen doesn't like LD and didn't want him on the team. Period. And he made an example out of him. It was a pissing contest that Jurgen won.
There is absolutely no on the field reason to leave him home even if he was fat and wasn't really passionate.
I just wish Jurgen would be honest about it and say that. I'm fine with that decision. And I am fine with him leading the charge. The man guided the team out of arguably the toughest group without the country's two best players (nonkeepers).

I can obviously see where you guys in the "bring worse players on purpose" camp are coming from if the player in question is a complete malcontent a-hole whose off the field issues are hurting performance, but I thought it was pretty much implied that Donovan isn't a "T.O." type and doesn't really fit the bill for that in this discussion.
Unless of course Donovan has started throwing teammates under the bus, holding out for contractual issues and working out shirtless in his driveway in the past year and I just somehow missed it.
Agreed, that was pretty much my whole point.
And this was my problem with it. There's no room for pissing matches from a head coach when the fricking world cup is concerned. You bring the players that give you the best chance to win, period.
I don't feel Jurgen did that, but it's a moot issue at this point.
Let's go kick Belgium's arse.
