It was clear to everyone back then that they were cooking the books... they weren't making it on match day revenue (so many empty seats) and their fanbase outside of Manchester was not very big... Those commercial deals were egregious... it was basically a frick you to FFP..

It just seemed like no one was every going to do anything about it, so I stopped caring...

Nah. If City doesn’t get bodied it means those rules don’t exist and every other English football club (other than of course Everton) can do exactly what they did with complete and total impunity with wrist slapping precedent set

On a deeper level it would make clear to everyone that essentially no rules of any kind exist, and at that point there’s no reason for a club to not treat every rule as just a suggestion. If nothing significant happens after being found guilty of over 110 violations and after impeding investigations and lying about everything, nothing can happen to any other club in the future. It’s the complete end of EPL/EFL governance

The repercussions of burying City are huge but the repercussions of not is an existential crisis to the English game

AGUERRROOOOOO will be but one of many scalps

Also if anyone thinks they stopped doing this in 2018 cough SFP. I seriously think they lack basic comprehension skills of what’s in front of them.

The premier league’s statement certainly did not make me think they have any intention of going easy on City.

Yeah we're fricked

In all honesty though, idk how they got here. This apparently started 17 years ago. UEFA lost their case and it wasn't solely due to being time barred if you read the entire decision. Deloitte, a big 4, somehow didn't find it but the premier league did?

Getting to nuts and bolts of it, it's still hard to wrap my mind around. The argument is that Mansour bought the club via Abu Dhabi United. Various interests in UAE bought into the club through sponsorships. These same entities received government grants for tourism. The argument is these grants were solely used to fund City sponsorships.

On one hand it's dodgy at absolute best. On the other hand you can't tell me the entire City deal was only worth 11M from 2011-2018. I'll accept it's probably juiced but 11M/year for shirt/stadium/campus sponsor? Nah.

There's a ton of questionable deals and financing in the PL and there's zero chance this is only a City exclusive deal.

I've said from the start of we're guilty then whatever but be realistic. The rules are absolute horse shite but we agreed to them. That said, a billion fricking pounds after reading the ruling also seems like a stretch.

Idk. Khaldoon and Co. seem confident so we'll see going forward. At this point I'd be fine shooting him and Ferran into the sun just to be done with it.

You got here because oil sheiks do not and never have given a single flying frick about the rules. I’ve been to the UAE and the whole culture there is trash.

Yeah but I'm not going to pretend your billionaires are somehow more ethical than ours. It's a game of capitalism at this point. They looked for an edge and exploited the frick out of a loophole they thought they found.

Unless you want to argue that Stan Kroenke has some sort of built in moral capital then I'm here for it.

Arguing that Arsenal or any other team has done anything approaching what city has done is pure cope.

Sheikhs hate accountability.

Just interest free loans from the shareholders. Totally don't apply to PSR rules and they're grandfathered in. Again, we're approving debt to comply with rules to "prevent clubs from amassing debt."

Again, defend Kroenke. This a zero sum race to the bottom. The rules are bullshite and are constantly OK to skirt as long as you're the right club.

Which club(s) is/are the right club(s)?

Certainly not Everton.

I’m not a City fan, but clearly the Premier League version of FFP protects the three red teams. All of it was originally started to protect Real Madrid from the new wave of Middle East owners. There are ways to protect against a City or PSG spending billions more than everyone without tying everything to current profits and losses. Now the decades established clubs have a perpetual advantage that won’t ever be overcome.

Nope but they should be able to do what they want. Why does Everton have to sell players? Forest? Newcastle? Because of FFP. The rules are dogshit and prevent investment. I want Everton to be able to invest and secure their future. Same with every other club in the league that has ambition.

Instead we have clubs qualifying for champions league and having to sell players to comply with the dog shite rules.

United, arsenal, Liverpool. They're OKed for interest fee loans. United got more COVID relief money than everyone else combined. Liverpool just rolled with Countinho money forever (they did do this and are the biggest club with a gripe against city but still).

The verdict today literally was "city invested beyond their means". We didn't spend more then other clubs. We didn't match fix like Juve. We didn't just buy a team. The ruling just said we invested more than the rules allowed. The rules are shite. We broke them and I fully accept whatever comes our way, but it's a massive dog and pony show.

If you want "fair play" then institute a cap. You can't do that because European law doesn't allow it and the people the same people lashing out at City are against billionaires pocketing money from the clubs they own.

Everyone knows you support Madrid #1 but that doesn’t mean you don’t defend City in every thread about them and root for them anytime they play someone not Madrid

This. True story: Deployed to Bahrain but had to go to Dubai to meet a ship. UAE requires a visa. Go to the UAE embassy in Bahrain, guy tells me my completed application is incomplete. Ask him what’s missing. He motions me to the side, asks if I’m stationed at the ASU (sailors called it Alcohol Support Unit), says he wants a fifth of Johnnie Walker Black. I come back with the “completed” application and get my visa. Because “Allah cannot see in Bahrain!”
Waiting for the Michael Oliver match-fixing allegations to come out. Because if you’ll spend that much to buy players, you’re not going to leave the refereeing to chance! “Rules for thee but not for me!”
