I think this boils down to two simple things:
1. Donovan would be a starter and feature of the offense if judged on where his abilities stand right now. Klinsmann's decision had nothing to do with that; it was based on Donovan's attitude or something else personal.
2. Klinsmann has earned a lot of political capital in the last ~15 months between the team's performance last year and the new players he has brought to the team. I am willing to give him the benefit of the doubt and won't change my mind on that even if we don't get out of the group.

Of course it is. That said, Klinsman is molding what he feels is the best unit at this point in time, to get out of the group stage.

He may be viewed a genius or a cad after the first three matches, but true fans should support him until then.

Agreed.

The arguments citing LD's current form, MLS, Landon's position as a forward or mid, etc. It's all bullshite. Jurgy wants you to believe those were deciding factors so he won't come off as an obvious spiteful arse.

Everyone wants to talk about the non-reasons. Jurgy does not understand or appreciate LD's personality, attitude, and what he represents. That is what keeps him off the roster and not a damn thing else.

Jurgy can do what he wants, and hell, it could pay off. Just don't buy into the misdirection.

I'm calling bs on this. True fans support the team, but can still be critical. Hell why do you think there are checks and balances in government? You should never put 100% trust in any one man, and much less blindly follow him after such a controversial decision. Fans are just as much part of a successful team than a manager is (IMHO).

That's also not the job of the national team coach. His job is to select the best players available for the World Cup and win matches. It seems like he's punted on both in order to look ahead to 2018.

It is his job. One of the main reasons that he was brought in was to overhaul the youth programs. He may not be the head coach of Germany anymore but he is one of the main reasons you see players like Ozil, Reus, Gotze, etc. on the highest level of football now.

Yeah, Mourinho and most European coaches and players all the time.

Claiming your side's out of contention for league titles or whatever to the press is pretty normal for European managers to take fan/media pressure off players.

I think both Rudi Garcia and Daniele De Rossi "conceded" that Roma was out of the Scudetto race after every Roma victory this season dating back to pre-season friendlies.

Does anyone else get the feeling that Klinsi just might not have any fricks to give at this point? He's getting paid no matter what,so he's gonna do things exactly how he wants to. If we crash out of the wc, whoever gave Klinnsmann the extension probably gets his marching orders before Jurgen does.

I think that is generally on point although I doubt Gulati will get fired, either.

I agree with Klinsmann on the issue of the Kobe Bryant contract, which is terrible. I strongly disagree with his attempt at comparing Donovan to post-injury Kobe and can do nothing but shake my head when someone thinks it is a good comparison.

To extend the basketball analogy, he might not believe in giving Landon a 2 year, 50 million dollar deal but he certainly loved giving a 10 year 100 million dollar deal to a 5 star recruit who may be Josh Selby or may be Jrue Holiday (those two were picked for a very clear reason).

Well, he has coached LD at both the club level and international level. I imagine he understands his personality, and attitude much better than anyone posting in this thread.

I would go the other way. If he were GM of the Lakers and every player made the same salary (or none at all), he would still pick Kobe.

I have been wondering about this. What is the consensus in Germany about Klinsmann's role in the development of this group of players? (Hendo?)

It's a good comparison to illustrate the point that we are overly concerned with what an athlete has already done. You can disagree with the point, re: Donovan, but you can't say that Landon <> Kobe, therefore the comparison is stupid.

Totally disagree. He has put faith into some young players, however, he has not given them anything more than a trip to Brazil. If they do not play well or do not compete well in camp, he doesn't ever have to put them on the squad again. It's not like he has contracted out Green for 10 years being with the USA. He is invited to the WC this year and that is it.

Sure there are busts, but he is looking at it from a business standpoint. A player is as good as his time weighted expected value of future productivity. Obviously the highest weight goes to the present and the WC.

I wanted Donovan on the squad. I bought a Donovan bomb pop jersey on the day they came out. I am a huge Donovan fan, but I can completely understand Jurgy and what he is doing. I don't think it has anything to do with power as much as motivation.

We didn't see training workouts or hear anyone in the locker room, but if Donovan wasn't as motivated as he needed to be, then things like this happens.

If a coach tells you what is expected and you fail to match or exceed expectations, there are consequences. It may not seem like a big deal due to Donovans history, but if you look at him as just another player who didn't practice hard enough or have his head in the right place, then I understand the decision.

I am not saying Donovan exibited these characteristics, but I am saying IF HE DID, then I understand.

Words that should never come out of the mouth of a coach. I have never met a high caliber athlete that did not think they could win. You don't take that away from them.

I agree. I think the talent in the latter stages of the tourney, and even in our group, is overwhelming... But as a coach and leader of this squad, to say that is completely unacceptable imo. If I were a player, I'd lose a little respect for him after reading that.

I wish this article was never published. Nothing good can come out of this.

How about helping players to realize that if you don't give 100% I won't pick you. Even if you have been a regular for 10 years, you must compete hard all the time. That's pretty much all I get out of this article and I think that is good for all the players to understand.

The players don't need an article to understand this. Donovan didn't make it, and I bet every one of the 23 players traveling know why. There are plenty of things in this article that shouldn't have been said by Klinns, and I'm struggling to find one statement that could be even considered beneficial.

Well it wasn't published by Jurgy. Writers love to bring up stuff like this because it is highly debatable. He says at the end it will take 7 perfectly played games to win. That seems about right to me. I'd say 99.9% of people believe that is as close to impossible as you can get.

It's definitely a culture clash moment because Americans don't believe you should even play if you can't win. Still, I think the point Jurgy tried to get across was to the fans that he isn't going to give someone a spot because historical performance. It's all about how you will play.

There are a lot of caveats in your statements, which are fine and lead to a potentially viable defense of Klinsmann's decision making, but there's nothing I've seen from Donovan that would indicate those concerns.

Especially after we have seen the problems in left midfield, which is where most reasonable people would have slotted him this time.

The leap of faith he has shown in some players is in fact a bigger deal than I think others believe. After all, if they don't do well this time around, we have to wait 4 more years for a meaningful tournament.

Operating on the importance of present value and contributions, there are only a handful (maybe two) of players who could contribute more this time around, and we would lose nothing of the potential future value of Green, Yedlin, etc if they weren't brought on as the 2014 team's weak links.
