He used to dominate a league that is still behind the 2nd division in a few countries.

He's a player that playing in the MLS shouldn't be held against, because he did so much for the MLS.

Yep, and guys like Wondo and Davis were in much better form in MLS. Landon was sporting at a lower rate than even Jozy.

Neither of them would do shite in the EPL lets be for real.

I agree with that. So far, we've been pretty much the same that we have been for the past 10-15 years.

Then you are not looking at the big picture

US Soccer needed a major overhaul in many aspects to compete with the elites on a consistent basis. This is just the start.

Oh. That's it?

The peak achievement that every professional player yearns for their entire career?

Nothing major.

It is major, but it's not like he has promised them the next 3 world cups... That's what a 10 year contract would do.

Kyle Beckerman

You clearly didn't watch his play against RSL in the MLS playoffs last year if you think he dominated...

Klinsmann is the one that said he dominated. He was probably just making the point that he thinks playing in the MLS makes Donovan complacent. It's not that playing in the MLS is necessarily a bad thing, it's that it shows that Donovan wasn't pushing himself.

His showing in April made it seem that he wasn't pushing himself for this World Cup, IMO. Then he made comments that added up to telling Klinsmann that he was just going to have to live with him not practicing hard. Why not have a closed-door meeting with Klinsmann and talk to him about that? Saying it publicly was basically trying to call Klinsmann on his bluff that he was going to require everyone to push themselves to be better. It's not the first time Donovan has tested that.

Interesting quotes in this old FIFA interview with LD:
from 2012
quote:

Jurgen’s very adamant about pushing us, even to the point of getting out of your comfort zone and I think it’s done wonders for a lot of our guys so far.

quote:

I think it’s continuing to challenge guys, particularly younger guys, to not be content with, you know, if you had a good season last year, don’t be content with that, keep going. If you had a good game last week, don’t be content with that, get better

So Donovan definitely knew what Klinsmann was requiring, and even talked like he thought it was a really good thing. He just didn't think it applied to him.

You guys have made some excellent points. Donovan did not deserve to go because you know for a fact he did not give 100%. Well, then why the frick is Dempsey on the squad?

Also, if we go back to the basketball comparisons, then Pop should not play Duncan, Parker, or Ginobili because they are old and cannot go 100% every night.

You know for a fact that he took a lengthy sabbatical, stayed in MLS when he could have gone to Europe, took the winter off before the World Cup, said publicly that he wouldn't give 100% in practice, etc.

I'm sure if Landon was starting on a championship caliber team in the best league in the world, JK would have a little more understanding for him taking it easy in practice.

I have viewed the sabbatical as a mental health break, and I do not think that Jurgen understood that. I am fine with Donovan having to earn back his spot just like any player coming off an injury, but the Gold Cup alone is worth a plane ticket.

Jurgen seems to be an anti-players coach. He brought in some random PDL type scrub to play over Michael Bradley to assert his dominance.

He shite on Benny Feilhaber in an interview for no apparent reason. A lot of people on this board thought Benny should have a shot at the 30 man roster, but no way that Jurgen would want "a player of his caliber".

He abandoned the formation we had run through the whole cycle (or at least 95% of the time) that led to an excellent 2013 to switch a diamond that makes it impossible to cover strong attacks.

He gave Yedlin a spot over Evans who is clearly a better RB at this moment. Let's not forget that Evans switched his position to have a shot with this team and saved our asses against Jamaica.

I have never been one to praise Jurgen, but he is the type of coach I dislike. He does not have the pedigree like Mourinho to act like a douche and write off or criticize his top players unnecessarily.

I love what he does in terms of expanding the pool, but he needs to move to technical director.

Exactly. This isn't a club team we are talking here. There sure are some dumbs on this board. Jurgy is obviously a double agent sent by Germany. They knew they would be in our group and sent Jurgy to sabotage the mighty US Soccer program.

I agree, and I thought Landon had every right to take it. But I think he did it knowing it wouldn't sit well with JK.

Anyway, I don't have a problem at all with JK leaving Landon off due to the kind of reasons already discussed. I like the way Jurgen handles the players as far as pushing them, letting it be known that he's disappointed with their off the field decisions, etc. I think we needed something like that to get where we are going, which IMO is winning multiple WCs in this century.

The issue I have with leaving Landon off is that it might cost us a goal or two at this World Cup. But there's really no way to know that.

I just don't see how it jump starts the US for now or the future. The best possible thing we can do is get as far as we can in every cycle, and it is pretty obvious that Landon increases our chances.

Dandy, your true fans should support him comment is rich coming from you. You also tried to give Mourinho insulting nicknames when he coached Madrid.

If Pop was playing a tournament that consisted of 7 games in a short span, i dont know if he takes Ginobili especially if Ginobili was giving him a problem off the court.

You see this kind of stuff all the time in sports. Players get cut and traded against the wishes of the fans because of problems that are similar to those of Donovan.

Dempsey

JK was mad that he came back to the MLS if i remember correctly. But maybe he is practicing harder than LD. I don't know I wasn't there

link to where Donovan practiced harder than Dempsey...

I was purely speculating as everyone of us have. If the complaint was that Donovan had gotten complacent and he was left of for reasons related to this, I would imagine he practiced less hard than someone who made the squad. Just my 2 cents.

I don't really know what all the fuss is about tbh. good players get cut, left off squads, or traded for all kinds of off the field issues. Soccer international and domestic, NFL, MLB, NBA, Dream Team, etc.
I mean its not like the Spurs/ Patriots/ Heat/ Brazil/ Barcalona/ Saints havent let go of players who could contribute

I misread your post. That is why I deleted it. The fuss is because this makes the team noticeably worse and could significantly affect the chance if getting out of the group.
