Dan Mullen's record as an SEC head coach is 54-53. He, Mark Stoops and James Franklin are the most overrated SEC HC's of the past 50 yrs.

.500 in the SEC is above average. A lot more SEC coaches in the past 20 years have been below .500 than above it.

To Illustrate: Kirby, Lane, Drink, Sark, Heupel, Kelly, and DeBoer were the only current* SEC coaches above .500 in SEC play. Venables just pulled up to .500.

Auburn has gone 11-28 since Malzahn left. Florida 12-19 since Mullen left.

It’s hard to win in the SEC.

If making a 12 team playoff is the ultimate goal, you can do that anywhere. It hasn't been proven that you can just win a natty anywhere though.

We’ve only had one 12-team playoff so literally nothing has been proven.

Miami

Very likely won’t make the ACC championship game and are even more unlikely to get in as an at-large

Was Texas the biggest bust team of the 2025 season?

They could still finish 9-3 and they’d arguably be the biggest bust—going from preseason #1 to eliminated from the playoffs with two weeks left in the regular season. Miami has a shout too tho.

Lane can go to the 5 star 3rd stringer who put up disappointing stats as a fish and say "your coach is misusing you, come play for me. And BTW, here's a much better NIL package."

We went and got Mizzou’s backup RB from last year and he’s #2 in the SEC in rushing. You’re right that the ability to hoard talent is gone. It’s why Saban bounced. But Kiffin also knows that he could get a slightly better roster at Florida than he can at Ole Miss (if the boosters open their wallets).

nobody in the country has any win like at Georgia. that game has to carry so much weight if bama is a 3 loss team but it likely won't mean a thing

No three loss at-large is getting into the playoff unless Bama keeps it respectable in a loss to Georgia in the SECCG.

Call me crazy, but I think Ole Miss can win a title. NIL and the portal changed everything. Remember 15-20 years when..

There’s still an advantage to being a blue blood and having those kinds of resources but that gap has narrowed significantly. Just look at Cignetti at Indiana. The right coach can take just about anyone to the top in today’s game.

It's a playoff. It's all about the bracket and matchups. Just shooting from the hip because things will change the next two weeks but you don't think Ole Miss could beat Notre Dame in Oxford and then beat Indiana in a bowl game ?!?

Ole Miss has a really good chance at a 5 or 6 seed too. Could be Georgia Tech or a G5 in Oxford first round. Let’s not pretend that the Rebs didn’t knock off Oklahoma in Norman and have a 4th quarter lead on Georgia in Athens.

For whatever reason the fanbase here doesn't want him. IDK why, they just don't. For the record I don't either.

I understand why the Gators would be all in on Kiffin and I think Kiffin would be a 100% lock if Ole Miss weren’t on their way to the playoffs right now.

If Ole Miss loses in Starkville and misses the playoffs, I’d bet big money on Lane going to Gainesville. But if Rebs make the playoffs Gators are probably gonna have to resign themselves to a bunch of really good backup options.

Drinkwitz isn’t as sexy as Lane but he’d still be the most successful coach Florida has hired since Urban.

No one is going to hire a coach until the regular season is over.

I think Eli Drinkwitz would leave Mizzou tomorrow if Florida asked him to.
quote:

If Lane goes 11-1 and makes the playoff, why would he leave Ole Miss?

Because he really wants to coach at a blue blood—Florida especially.

But he also really wants to compete for a national championship so we’re about to find out which one he cares about more.
Auburn’s last winning season was 2020 when they fired Malzahn after going 6-5. Since then they’ve had four straight losing seasons.

They’re currently 4-5 with the following games left on the schedule.

@Vandy
Mercer
Bama

They’ll need to pull a top-25 conference upset and win a bowl game to have a winning season. Do y’all think they get it done and get the ever-elusive winning season?

Damn, even State has finished ranked 6 times

Not ripping on State but 8 for Ole Miss.
quote:

If you look at the rosters, UGA, Bama, LSU, Ohio State, etc. all have as much talent as they ever have.

I actually think that’s only true for Ohio State (who went out and spent $25M on a roster).

UGA, Bama, and LSU didn’t play that game and lost a combined 11 games for it.
quote:

Reminder: Ole Miss built a $10M roster to [NOT] reach the 12-team Playoff

How much did y’all spend to go 4-8?

Our losses are better and our wins are better.

Wins

OM over UGA 28-10 > Bama over UGA 41-34
OM over SC 27-3 > Bama over SC 27-25
OM over Arky 63-31 < Bama over Mizzou 34-0

Losses

OM to Kentucky 20-17 > Bama to Okie 24-3
OM to Florida 24-17 > Bama to Vandy 40-35
OM to LSU 29-26 < Bama to Tenn 24-17

And blew out another team that you barely beat.

Blew out two teams that they barely beat.

No chance every 2 loss SEC team goes undefeated the next 2 weeks.

I think Ole Miss is the least likely to come through with a tough road game at Florida. Texas could definitely lose to Texas A&M but A&M could jump Tennessee with that win. The other likely opportunities are Ohio State blowing out Indiana and Notre Dame dropping a second game. All that said, Tennessee is out if there are no upsets these next two weeks. I’d put the odds at 50/50.
