Can you explain the offsides rule? I don't get why they have it and it seems stupid as hell. Just because someone beats them down the field, they can't get the ball and score?

its so you dont cherry pick and just hang out behind the defense
no different than jumping offside in football or being offsides in hockey

Not a troll, I am trying to understand soccer better, but I was a lacrosse player so the strategy seems wayy different.

Offical Ideas for Soccer thread
Don't allow subs during stoppage time penalize intentionally slow play during stoppage time. When teams do that it seems to completely contradict the idea of stoppage time

Well refs are supposed to add 30secs to the end of the game for every sub even in stoppage time

Gotcha
Still seems kinda dumb to me to allow stoppages during stoppage time.

here’s a modest proposal: soccer should take its cue from boxing and install three field-side judges to secretly score every 15-minute interval. Goals would be like knock-outs. Points would only come into play in the case of a tie.

That is literally ridiculous, it owuld get rid of team identities of teams.
If an old school Italian team faced that they would be destroyed, it punishes teams who make sure they are solid at the back and difficult to beat and give all the advantage to attacking teams that are seen as amazing to watch.
Most people love the pass pass pass style of Spain, but I hate it why play 7 passes when you can play 2? So I would score completely differently to Sergio from Barcelona, and Pepe from Rome will mark differently to me.

Seems like someone upstairs could either:
- stop the clock when there is a stoppage
Or
- keep a running time of the total stoppages then have that exact time sent down to the referee for the over 90 minutes time.

The center ref has the only official time.

Well yea. Why can't that burden be taken off of him to someone upstairs?

Why would it be? They're not on the field. He is. And it's not like it's a cumbersome job (keeping time). It's a matter of pressing a button on a stop watch. FIFA (LOL I know) likes to keep power in the hands of the center official and to a lesser extent the linesmen. I totally understand that line of thinking.
You're trying to make things more complicated than they need to be.

Stoppage time is fine the way it is. I don't want to see a game called when a team is a couple of seconds away from a good look. This isn't basketball or football, wait until the ball is cleared before you call the game.
