How did you become a fan of whatever club team you root for?

I've said it before that as much as I try to get into soccer and the EPL seems to be the main road for most Americans. I understand why, broadcast in English, an elite league, and I imagine many can even trace some roots back to a specific region / city. With that said I just can't latch myself on to some English powerhouse and start actively rooting for them but what is your story behind your favorite club team?
I know there are some MLS supporters here as well as some supporters of teams from all across Europe so I just wanted to see how you guys got into it.
In an attempt to get into it I started following ADO Den Haag out of the Dutch League last year because The Hague is the only European city I've been it so it made sense. I had planed to see a friendly between them and Swansea when I was there but the schedule just didn't work out. It wasn't easy watching the games this past season as the games are in Dutch and I have to find them all online (plus the time difference), but I do admit I did enjoy watching what I could. They finished 9th out of 18 in the Eredivise which isn't awful considering they had a rough start and were in last about half way through. They only lost 1 game in the final 2 months or so and that was on the road to the Dutch powerhouse Ajax.
I'll probably follow them again this upcoming season but it really isn't the easiest thing to watch an average Dutch team.
eta: I always did think they had one of the better looking logos as well.

I picked Tottenham Hotspur because they weren't powerhouse, they had Defoe and Bale (players I liked), I liked their colors, I like London, and it's fun to say.
At this point, I probably follow them closer than any other team in any other sport.
I just picked my Bundesliga team this week. Going with VfL Wolfsburg. My mom's cousin (and maid of honor) is best friends with Kevin de Bruyne's mom. I love to watch him play. He also could be my brother. We look a lot alike. It's pretty cool that they are owned by the Volkswagen group too.

By the way, putting all of that effort into watching the Dutch league is kind of pointless. Quality really isn't much better than the MLS.

I originally picked Arsenal and AC Milan in the early 2000s because they had my two favorite players - Thierry Henry and Shevchenko. I later dropped Milan after Shevchenko and Kaka departed and I realized what a scumbag Berlusconi was.

Born and raised a Boca fan.

Didn't start really following club soccer until Champions League 2003, but I chose my club allegiance based on Michael Owen's and Zinedine Zidane's performance in World Cup 1998. I dropped Real Madrid after reading about their connections with the Franco regime. I wasn't really comfortable with supporting a team with those associations.

Arsenal - followed the French national team in 2006. First time in Europe and happened to be in France for the World Cup and it was awesome. Loved Zidane, Henry, Vieira, etc. Zidane retired so I picked Arsenal, since they had several of the players that I was already a huge fan of. Learned a bit more about the club (French manager, cool style of play, etc) and became a fan. Somewhere in between they were my automatic FIFA team, so that helped for sure.
Marseille - lived there. Have several jerseys but I don't really fall the team as much as Arsenal.

Not sure if this is an accurate measure or not but I know the majority of the current Dutch national team roster plays in the Eredivise.
With that said I remember hearing during the Netherlands-Spain game that the Dutch are filled with a bunch of young players so maybe as they start to develop they'll be picked off by the more elite leagues of Europe?

Sneijder plays for Galatasaray.
Robben plays for Bayern.
RVP plays for United, and was at Arsenal before.
Kuyt, like Sneijder, plays in Turkey, but he spent his best days at Liverpool. I think he was in Eredivise before that though.
De Jong, De Guzman, and Huntelaar also play abroad.
But yes, I think their young talent will be poached by Bundesliga and the Premier League.

If you want to know exactly what I look like, just imagine that De Bruyne and Jim Carrey had a baby.

Dortmund b/c that's who was on TV when my kid needed to pick one for his club "homework." I then came to see that BVB is a lot like LSU. Cool coach, famously rabid fan base, and a notorious home atmosphere. They also pick out great talent out of the ether... before selling them to Bayern.

I picked Arsenal back in 2005. They had won the BPL in 2004 while not losing a game, and had just won the FA Cup. I picked them because I wanted a team near the top, so they'd be on Fox Soccer Channel enough, and I wasn't gonna pick Man U because it felt like picking the Yankees, and didn't pick Chelsea because I had 2 guys in my office that were huge Chelsea fans and I didn't want to fall in line with them. Arsenal also had Henry and previously had Bergkamp, so they were the choice.
Seemed like a side that would always be hoisting trophies, but the 2014 FA Cup is actually the first trophy that Arsenal won since I started supporting them!
But I still enjoy their style of play, and have great hope that they will start to spend a little more now that The Emirates Stadium is paid for.

I was watching some Oasis concert on TV and they started the "who the frick are man united?". They were drunk as hell, playing live in front of a shite load of people, and looked to be having fun. So I went with City.
Plus lot of my friends liked Chelsea and ManU. I liked being different

In the early to mid 90's I was mostly watching La Liga and the Bundesliga as they were on TV more (Fox Sports Americas). The EPL and Eredivisie were harder to catch as they were on Prime sports. I remember on Prime they would show commercials during games; sucked arse.
Never really picked a team until I was watching a Merseyside Derby and Robbie Fowler started snorting the 6 yard box after he scored. It was a big frick you to fans blasting him about rumored cocaine use. Became a Liverpool fan and it seemed like a natural choice as I never cared for Man U. Cantona was an arrogant prick and Sir red face complaining all the time didn't help matters either.
