Haven't watched US soccer in 3 years since the 2018 debacle. How's the talent look?

It's about time to fire up 2022 qualifying so I'm getting back in the saddle. Do we actually have some young talent or are we in an actual state now that the old guard is gone?

Go look at the last page on the Americans abroad thread above. There's a summary that'll tell you everything you need to know.

The vast majority of our starters will be playing in Champions League, and some of our bench will be as well.

And we're pretty much fielding a U23 team.

From a talent standpoint, this is the most talented team we have ever had and it’s not even close to be honest. We should be solid for this coming World Cup but I’m most excited about the 2026 WC when these youngsters are in their prime.

The most accomplished American soccer player to ever play the field will play in the 2022 World Cup. The only question is who you think that player is. I think you could argue anyone of pulisic, dest, McKenzie, Adams, Reyna, or brooks will have a better club resume in 2022 than any American field player to play in a prior World Cup.

Most of the starters in 2022 will be meaningful contributors to champions league caliber teams. The bench players should mostly comprise of players regularly starting for lesser first division teams in Europe. In every prior World Cup, that type of player would be considered a top American player. Basically guys with resumes like bedoya and Geoff Cameron are no longer key starters but are fighting for bench positions in the 2022 player pool.

We should have a legit shot at winning the thing in 2026. Our top talent will be peaking and we should have the next crop of youngsters where these guys are now to fill the voids. We need a true #9 and potentially some depth at CB.

Clint Dempsey’s resume is better than the resume of Adams, Reyna, and Brooks by November 2022.

I would say the same for Friedel, Keller, and Howard (although I think you were only going with non-goalkeepers).

Claudio Reyna, Steve Cherundolo, and even Michael Bradley have better resumes too.

I can certainly see Pulisic, Dest, and McKennie having better resumes than any field player in US history by November 2022 though.

And I may be missing a country, but the only teams that I can say definitely have better 18-22 year-olds than the US are England and France.

Brooks has played and scored in a World Cup already, and is a highly respected defender (Hertha even honored him after her transferred). I'm not sure I'd include him with the other two.

Can't wait for Altidore and Bradley suit up for the next WC! MLS! MLS!

There are no Feb-April Drew Bianco's on this team.

Clint's resume heading into his first World Cup cycle wasn't better than Adams and Reyna's heading into their first World Cup cycle.

That's the only fair way to compare it.

I agree for sure on that point. Clint hadn’t even played a second outside of MLS at that point.

Adams and Reyna (gio) probably need another good season to surpass Dempsey’s and cherundolo’s body of work, but their club resume is better than Claudio or Bradley already in my opinion.

Gio and Adams are teenagers starting for top table bundesliga teams. Gio has 10 champions league appearances already. Tyler Adams has 9. Both will add to that total in 2021-2022 assuming health.

Michael Bradley played in 0 champions league games. His European career was the eredivisie, a bottom table bundesliga team and a cup of coffee with Roma.

The best team Claudio Reyna played in was rangers. He played in 8 champions league games, all with rangers and all in the first group stage. Man city was a bottom table team when Claudio played there.

Even Clint Dempsey and Cherundolo - 0 champions league minutes between them.

I don’t mean to poopoo on the earlier generation they were our pioneers, but the kids are simply playing in another level from their forbearers.

And finally I’ll get on my hobby horse and finish by saying Beasley has the best club resume of Dempsey, Claudio, cherundolo, and Bradley.

I wouldn't put Adams and Reyna on the same level of experience and accomplishments. Adams is 22 years old and has played over 13k professional minutes. Reyna only has about 3k minutes.

Clint had just finished playing his 1st season in MLS when he played his first WCQ match. Only had 2321 pro minutes (all in MLS) to his name, and he was already 21 or 22.

And that was pre-Beckham MLS, not 2021 MLS.

Is there a thread for the CONCACAF Nations League roster? I like the team Berhalter picked for once. Left a couple guys out but now they’ll be starters at the Gold Cup so more experience

That is fair. But as a bit of a counter point sergino dest has only played 3500 career first team minutes. the moment sergino dest became a regular starter for Barcelona his resume vaulted to the top because it’s Barcelona. For me playing at such a level trumps a longer career played at lower levels.

Dortmund and Leipzig certainly aren’t Barcelona, but they are teams that expect to play in the knock out stages of the champions league. For me their brief tenure at that level is more impressive than a Dempsey at Fulham or cherundolo at Hannover.
