The Athletic's article said Gio apologized for his early lack of effort. Gio's Instagram says he apologized. Gregg told the story to a leadership meeting to make himself look good? Is that a leader!? It smells like a hatchet job to make Gregg look better. BTW Matt Turner liked Gio's post.

Interesting discussion on the “in soccer we trust” pod with Charlie Davies, Jimmy Conrad, and Heath Pearce. Segment is fifteen minutes long and worth a watch since these guys have some more inside info on what happened.
1. Players were upset that Gio got 7 minutes against England instead of zero. They talk here about team dynamics and still playing a guy who has a bad attitude and doesn’t put in the same effort as the rest of the group. There was concern that by playing him more you might lose the respect of the rest of the team.
2. The vote was amongst the coaching staff and was 9-8 in favor of keeping him.
3. They agree Gregg shouldn’t have said anything about it. They doubt that he straight up told Gio he was only getting spot minutes and think it was a more nuanced discussion about MMA being preferred in midfield and Pulisic/Weah on the wings, or a statement to try to motivate him to try harder that fell flat.
4. Even before coming on against the Netherlands Gio wasn’t warming up and doing sprints etc like he should be and they thought that was odd

Right. So did Les Miles' players. So what?
The Gio thing is a head scratcher. Does he have these issues at Dortmund? If not, then is it just an entitled attitude because of what...him playing for Dortmund and deserving a starting role on the USMNT, or who his father is?

Imagine GGG sat Adams down and told him he would have a “limited role” and gave Acosta most of the minutes at the 6. Think he would have been out there busting his arse against Doha City?
Yeah, actually. Tyler’s goal is to work harder than anyone else on the field. Plus he’s way more mature than Gio. But until we know what GGG said to him and when he said it then this is all just hypothetical.

Maybe Gio is an arse. All I know is that the US’s possessions in the attacking third were much more threatening when he was on.
Honestly if you know you’re the best player on the team and told beforehand that you weren’t in the team’s plans, I’d be checked out too

Wonder how that talk went.
Greggg: "Listen Gio, your vibes don't match the positive vibe culture I'm going for so you won't get a lot of playing time."
Gio: "Maybe you can play me more centrally against Wales as a false 9, and--"
Gregg: "No thanks, we've got the speed and power of Jordan Morris, and the system fit of Ferreria who are both vibacious. And anyhow, the goal of the goal is to pass."

This whole stupid story confirms Zidane needs the job.
Everyone knows Gio has an attitude problem. Go look at any thread on here, whether Dortmund or USMNT, and you will see numerous comments about his walking around, facial expressions, hand gestures, etc. the job of a coach is to manage the attitudes and personalities of players. Tyler Adams might get motivated and work his arse off if told he wasn’t featuring, but Gio, probably pretty obviously, had the opposite reaction. Gregg should have known this long ago and planned accordingly. His inability to coach different players differently confirms he’s not the man for the job.
Circling back to Zidane, he was able to manage all the personalities at Madrid from 2016-2018 during one of the most successful club runs in history. He would be able to put all these guys in place and get the most out of this group in 2026.

The simping for a clear douche teammate is hilarious in this thread.
Berhalter sucks arse, but the people thinking Reyna is some established superstar beyond criticism or being brought down to earth are delusional.

Ofcourse Adams said what he said about GGG and the next cycle, the team captain is not going to through the current coach under the bus.
Just like the current coach wouldn't throw a player under the.... nevermind.
Also Gio in his November matches played 63, 66, 30, and 45 leading to the 2 weeks before the world cup and played 90 right after it. Muscle tightness lie was just that.
The only thing I believe with GGG is when he said he never really considered a false 9 to get the best 11 on the field and then banked on the 3 strikers he called up. Inexcusable.

LOL at everyone having an excuse for Tyler Adams potentially liking Gregg. But heaven forbid someone points out the reports that Gio wasn't fully fit. That's all just lies.
It's just hilarious people are so triggered by Gregg, they pick and choose what conspiracy theories to believe.

Gio probably wasn’t, but neither were Weston, Weah, or Dest and they still played a ton of minutes. I think when taken in the aggregate the evidence for sure points to his lack of play time being a Gregg decision and not an injury decision.

I have no idea if Tyler loves or hates them; I am however confident he wouldnt throw him under the bus either way.
And the most prominent conspiracy theory in this thread is your steadfast belief that Gio must have not been 100% and that is why GGG did what he did - the fact he played significant minutes before, had 2 weeks between, and went 90 immediately after does not seem to matter, yet GGG saying "muscle tightness" does (even though he recented). There is nothing to support your not 100% theory. That is not Greggs stated position or Gios. That is your conspiracy theory.

Enlighten us - what were these reports? How do they overrule what both GGG and Gio have stated (well GGG after he got caught lying about it and recanted)?
Edit to add: Keeping in mind he told Gio he wasnt going to play (unless you think Gio is lying) yet trotted him out against Doha United FC or whatever.
And this is not simping for Gio. He has demonstrated immature behaviour for a few years now... he needs to grow up and hopefully will - but clearly there was some communication to trigger the pouting and if it you cant play because your hurt - now go take on Doha... that just doesnt make sense

Bravo strawman - Also by doing it again infers you did it successfully once.
And no one won - we all lost. And Gio needs to grow up - but this was disastrous handling and I am not sorry that I feel like Reyna in current form would bring more to the table then Haji freaking Wright or Jordan Morris. We all knew coming into this tournament we needed a plan B as we did not have a true striker. This was GGGs response down to saying he never considered changing up to get the best on the field. Instead he insulted a very talented brat who acted like a brat and we were all worse for it.
