I’m just relieved fifa decided to do away with the three team groups they originally proposed for this format.

Wouldn't an expansion out to 64 (for symmetry, balance, matchup) make for a more difficult hosting scenario?

The plots already lost on that.

The next World Cup is hosted in Spain, Portugal, Morocco... and Uruguay and Argentina.

Poster said in one of the daily threads having third place teams make it has created a bit more meaning for some of these minnows in every match - they have a legit chance of advancing - and in my mind also means there is more to play for on the last group match day.

Yes it cuts both ways but there seems to have been a benefit thus far.

So many uninteresting games.

I mean we all watch every 2v15 matchup in the tourney for the 20% chance that it ends up being close

If it is 48 teams it should be the best 8 group winners go straight through to the round of 16. The other 4 group winners and the 12 runners up have a play off round. Probably logistically difficult to organise but possible.

Third place teams advancing is the problem

So we’re rewarding the shite groups where winners coast to 9 points and punishing ones where draws happen between the main contenders? Nah

A lot like college football expanded playoffs now.

I agree, but I also disagree.

Under prior format, opening game loss and you were a dead team walking. Not impossible to advance, but a steep climb. Now, they still have everything to play for.

Not really. In the six, 32-team format World Cups since 2002, 11 different teams lost their opening game and still advanced. If you play the powerhouse top 10 team in match 1, you often lose.

Some years, like 2022, 3 different teams have lost their opening match and still advanced. One of those teams went on to win the tournament—Argentina

There have been 20 teams advance with 4 points or less.

But I get what you’re saying, pressure is on if you lose the opening match, and you can’t lose again.

I know Italy shouldn't have messed up in qualifying but how the hell did they not make it and some vacation destination made it

Couldn’t beat Bosnia in 120 minutes and lost on pens.

It’ll fix itself as the Cup progresses.
