France have officially become "Tier 2" in WC play today leaving England and Spain behind. A back to back is really possible with their young force, they haven't peaked yet..or have they?

The only country to come close to challenging Germany, Italy amd Brazil were seemingly the Argies but they may have plateaued.

Deschamps is such a negative coach, but the French still break forward at such pace that I'm hopeful that maybe someone more forward thinking could possibly take over and make them slightly more entertaining.

4 years is a long time away to be making predictions for, and I have less faith in this French team repeating than either 2014 Germany or 2010 Spain. They really struggle to break teams down when they aren't on the counter. That's why they looked pretty mediocre in the group stages. If not for the 1st half goals that were fortunate and against the run of play, I think today's game goes differently.

Yes because Mancini is their manager

I was thinking more because of the decline of Serie A.

No doubt they lack compared to other countries (France) but he is awful nonetheless.

The defending champs have been among the favorites the last few world cups and each has flamed out early so of course there’s no guarantee they’ll replicate their performance again in 4 years. To answer the question though, it would be really hard but not impossible. Those 3 have been winning trophies over a span of 7 or 8 decades though, France didn’t play in a WC final until 1998 so they have a big gap to close. It would take them dominating for a while while the other 3 nations do nothing, which I don’t see happening. Germany and Brazil are still perennial contenders. Italy is the most likely for them to close the gap on if they don’t get their shite together soon

Low-key, France is the top performer (besides Germany and Brazil) in the past 20 years. France could've won it in 2006 if they had a real manager. France is like Miami/uf/fsu in cfb, a sleeping giant finally coming to life.

It really should be the Big 2. Italy is clearly a level below Brazil and Germany. Germany has made the semifinals more times (13) than Italy has gotten out of the group stage (11). Plus the World Cup Italy won in 1934 was rigged. And to answer your question, I would say France can challenge Italy to be the third greatest WC country but it's very unlikely they'll catch Brazil and Germany.

Germany is going nowhere, but I'm iffy on Brazil. They produce talent but something's missing can't put my finger on it.

Making 3 out of the last six WC finals is damn impressive.

Shouldn't the question be: Can the big 3 challenge France?

Brazil is missing nothing but luck. The world cup is a tournament of luck. You can't just be good and win it, you have to have things bounce your way. Hell! France had the first two goals bounce their way after being firmly out played the first 60 some odd minutes. Brazil was unlucky in the Belgium game, from that own goal to all those missed chances. They were clearly the best team in the tournament.

Brazil is going nowhere until Neymar either becomes mentally and physically tougher or someone else steps up and becomes a 1a to his one or even a more alpha role. Feel like he’s too much of a bitch to be the main cog.

Serie A has been improving rapidly over the past few years. It's been stronger than Bundesliga for a while now using any metric people were using 6 years ago to say Bundesliga was stronger.

Italian NT team problem has little to do with Serie A and everything to do with missing the transcendent attackers they've had in the past.

This year will also be first that allows big clubs to have B teams in Serie B which has been issue for development of younger players.

Italy likely won't be a true contender soon unless some young proxies like Chiesa etc take next step but with a decent manager can easily do as well as they did under Conte.

This is the worst French team we will see for the next decade...and they just won the World Cup.

Of course, if i was laying odds on 2022 world cup, i'd make France 5/1 favs
Germany 8/1 2nd fav

Now that Argentina doesn't have to play the ball thru messi every game, they could make a run we have expected for years.
