Serie A has been improving rapidly over the past few years. It's been stronger than Bundesliga for a while now using any metric people were using 6 years ago to say Bundesliga was stronger.

Roma and Juventus were impressive in CL this past year, true. But they are still rated as the 4th best league by CL 2018-19.

This year will also be first that allows big clubs to have B teams in Serie B which has been issue for development of younger players.

Completely tangential but what are your thoughts on this? I’ve read some takes of widely varying opinion (from good bc it will help develop talent to bad bc it will cannibalize smaller clubs) and have been wondering what your 2 cents might be since you’re this board’s foremost Italian soccer guy.

It will definitely hurt some smaller teams that flip between B and C. Absolutely in terms of less spots for $ but also getting less loaners from big clubs.

However, it will help development of young players as it means less wasted years of being loaned to clubs that are the wrong fit.

In the big picture, it will very likely help the NT but probably help Juve, Roma etc a lot more.

Added: One thing people seldom mention about the B teams though is that they may help attendance and kindle more excitement for Serie B.

I'm not sure if this dynamic is true in England and Spain but in Italy the formula to do really well in Serie B is to load up on veteran players with lots of experience in the division.

Teams of mainly journeyman, seasoned professional, types in their very late 20s to mid 30s usually do much, much better than teams that play a lot of young talent. (Main reason that loaned young players don't always get enough playing time).

Having a few B teams full of budding stars may be a bit of fresh air for fans.

Are you sure about that?

Last time I looked Serie A was 3rd and actually a lot closer to 2nd place EPL than 4th place Bundesliga.

I'm iffy on Brazil
why? They’re the most historic nation with arguably the best team in the world. They got very unlucky against Belgium.

France won't make it out of the group in Qatar.

Look at the last two times that they've made the final, the following World Cup they failed fantastically, with the last time being a full blown mutiny. I can see this squad getting tired of Deschamps' shite really quick, especially now that they will be getting a nice ego boost with this win.

Just read about N'Zonzi going get the trophy so that Kante can hold it because he was too shy to go get it and it made me kind of sad. I would've loved to see Anelka assault Squillaci with the cup.

Best friends France is not as fun

These are the actual rankings:

1 SPAIN 106.998

2 ENGLAND 79.605

3 ITALY 76.249

4 GERMANY 71.427

UEFA Website

Again, Serie A is well ahead of Bundesliga by every single metric people used to claim Bundesliga was stronger 6-7 years ago.

Not really surprising people wouldn't know this since "decline of Serie A" was a much bigger story in the US and discussion subject on this board than the return of Serie A.

People aren't going to believe in the strength of Serie A until the Milanese clubs are back in the spotlight. With AC Milan and Inter down, it makes it seem like the whole league is down. You also have a lot of the same issues the Bundesliga has perception wise with one team dominating championships.

Italy is clearly a level below Brazil and Germany.
Italy has been down and rank them how you want but no doubt they are football blue blood and intertwined in the upper echelon with Brazil and Germany whom they have the same amout of trophys with and have absolutely dominated in WC play. Most finals have featured those 3. That's not up for debate.

What makes them more historic than Uruguay and Italy? Argentina, Germany? Better right now than France?

Spain is and has had a good run but many newer fans may not understand how cyclacle this is.

Italy has either failed to qualify or not gotten out of the group stage nine times. By comparison, Germany has failed to get out of the group stage only two times and Brazil only three times. Both countries dwarf Italy's performance at the World Cup in every way except for wins.

Yeah, I agree, especially AC Milan since Inter is pretty good right now but imagine few will notice until the next CL group stage.

It's just a bit odd that when Bundesliga had many good European runs and solid performances by teams other than Bayern around 5-7 years ago, all you heard from US soccer pundits and, really, on this board, was that La Liga, EPL, Bundesliga were the clear top 3 leagues.

Yet, these things being cyclical, when Serie A has similar success the past 5 seasons (along with more teams playing young talent and exciting styles): mums the word.

The poster who stated matter of factly that Bundesliga was currently ranked ahead of Serie A and people downvoting the actual rankings probably all really believe that I was just making it up since it gets so little press.

I do agree that Juve kicking it up to Bayern, Real and Barca level (for example, a rotational player starting at striker for a World Cup finalist) hurts perception in as many ways as it helps.

I really don't disagree about Italy being inconsistent.

However, "blue blood" in every sport is usually a perception based on that "except for wins" you mention.
And, Italy has over the entire history of the sport been winning titles and in the highest profile finals and semi-finals as much as anyone which is kind of the bottom line.

Based on their history and talent pool I also doubt anyone would really be that shocked to see Italy in the semi-finals of the next Euro or WC even if they have been down the past decade.

Inter is good but if you look at the table, you see them 20 points behind Juve. It goes back to the perception of them being lapped in the league

Argentina dumped manager.

New beginnings.

The 2017 u20 worlds semi finalists were England, Italy, Uruguay. And Columbia.

Those kids will be the upcoming stars in 2022. Of course random guys will be stars too.

Croatia won the u20 9 years ago.
Those guys showed up 2018.

Italy being in u20 champ game supports notion that they will compete at high level again soon. 2022.
