I wish there was a better way, but there really isn't. In hockey people sub throughout the entire game, and maybe get a total of 30 minutes played in a 3 overtime game. Not quite the same as soccer where there are players who run 7 miles a game and play 120 minutes. They would also need to go back to golden goal. Plaschke should stick to talking about the Lakers.

I don't care for games ending end in PKs, but I really don't know of a better solution so I can't say too much.
That's pretty much where I'm at. It's more a bummer than something that just has to be changed.

To the people complaining about PKs.
You agree with Bill Plaschke. Let that sink in.
Gonna team up with Jemille Hill next?

He does have a point, though. And offers up a solution.
However, I do understand how the structure of the sport does limit its options for overtime play in playoffs.

They lied to you. In regular season games there are shootouts after an OT period
In playoffs they keep playing til the next goal

If games averaged 6 or 7 goals per game instead of 3, do u think there would be as many ties? Serious question.. Not flaming.
I get that ties are legit in league play but it is problematic for single elimination tournaments. Don't know the solution either.

Hockey obviously has way more subs than soccer, the original game is 60 minutes as opposed to 90, and it's played on ice not 90 degree heat. Stupid comparison. Even adding a couple of more subs wouldn't do much. There's only so much one player with fresh legs can do.
You had 120 minutes to prove you were better at soccer and couldn't do it. Now you have to be better at dealing with pressure. I have no problem with it

Shootouts might be great TV and great drama
Which is entertainment which is what it's all about at the end of the day. I don't see the problem.

I think it would be cool if they played 10 minute periods after regulation and took off a player after every 10 minutes.
But Chile wouldve just taken out attacking players and brazil wouldn't have had as many peiple to send forward

Whole lot of ties in football.
In the playoffs even.

Yeah, you definitely shouldn't have posted in this thread, because that was such a shitty response.

yea just make them play another overtime and risk injury. They have already been running all over the place, what's a little more.
It's comments like these that show people have never played the game.
Unlimited subs? Why make a game be decided by the second string.

You must understand, the people bitching about PKs are the same ones who bitched that the Vikings lost on a FG in OT instead of getting a fair chance to score. So now we have that stupid rule change.
Or, they are the same ones who said, "Both teams understood the rules and had to play by them before the game." in response to the OT haters.
Some people are never happy with sport. I like the penalty kicks. Only change I'd make would be to maybe move them back a little.

It's no different than college football overtime giving each team the ball at the 25 yard line.
Except it's completely different.

I like how people who never watch soccer just roll up with all these solutions to situations they deem as shortcomings of the game. It's amazing how soccer has gotten along all of these years without their brilliant problem solving abilities.

You know what would make baseball better? If they moved the walls in closer. I mean, the only exciting thing in baseball is the home run. Amirite?

Who said anything about fixing it? I'm simply saying that your comparison is horrible.
