It keeps a team from just keeping a player on the other side of the field just cherry picking. Waiting on long passes to score. Offsides in soccer makes way more sense than in Hockey yet it applies to both. Keeps players from cherry picking goals. Every sport in the world does not have to be set up like American football. If people want to watch then watch and learn the game as it is meant to be played. If not then don't.
