It would be on highway 6, maybe a little more north than I was thinking. There are a couple of sharp curves, where the road goes around the rock piles. Maybe there by Hester? I don't have google earth here, or else I would find it.

Bamboo Gin and Rum. Should have stuck with the San Miguels. Still my all-time favorite beer.

Enjoy reading all the posts by you guys and ladies. Appreciate all the work y’all did and in some cases are doing.
There seems to be some reoccurring themes:
- most everyone loves San Diego
- most everyone hates Twenty Nine Palms, Fort Riley, and Fort Sill.
PS We gotta find out what the deal is with these strange, big, flat, stacked pyramid rocks in OK. I’m intrigued. I enjoyed learning about the Wichita Mountains.

I think I found what the rock piles are. It's a rock formation called Baldy Point. When you pass by it on the road, you see the south and eastern sides, and the rock is more broken up and worn smooth. The north and western sides appear to be rougher and steeper from photos I found. It's a popular spot for rock climbers.

Least: Fort Polk
Leesville, LA = born and raised there, back when it was Camp Polk - retired there for 15 years until I had to move for health reasons.
Just curious as to your impressions = not enough artistic stimulation? = no spectacular geographical features? = misfit with the culture? =
I'm not surprised at Ft Polk not being one anyone's favorite list, and I am unfamiliar with any other military institutions except for the ones my son and grandchildren were stationed at. My favorite of all those would be the AFB in Rapid City, ND - memory fails me on the name = keep coming up with Ellington but that's in Texas.

Fort Leonard Wood Mo. the duty was easy and the area was beautiful.

Favorite was Ft. Belvoir because it was only about 18 miles south of Washington D.C. and the capital city was rockin' in the early 70's. Suffered through my first major snowfall while there.
Least favorite was Ft. Polk. Hot as hell in July & August. Leesville was a dump but I did have one great day there. That's when I got my orders to go to Belvoir.
Ft. Campbell, Kentucky was not a bad post, but most of it is located in Clarksville, Tennessee. Had some really good times there, also.
Ft. Sherman, Panama Canal Zone was just a 2 week stay for Jungle Warfare Training but it was a hell of a gig! Lots of really big snakes in those jungles.

quote:Stationed there as a geographic bachelor because my kids were in high school and I was a battalion commander at the time. Went through Hurricane Sandy while I was there . Could not get used to jug handle turns and the fact that you were not allowed to pump your own gas. Really learned to love the concept of “diners” (very few chain restaurants in central-south Jersey). Overall, a good experience.
Ft. Dix was was miserable

Favorite duty station
McConnell AFB - Wichita Kansas
Least favorite base
Any training base - Lackland / Biloxi even though I had some good times off post.
Currently work on Corry Station in Pensacola and even though I’m not military anymore I enjoy the area. There are run down parts of Pensacola however Pensacola Beach and the surrounding area is awesome.

Pensacola NAS. Apartment on the base was really close to the beach, it was about 6 hours from my hometown, and they made a damn good omelet for breakfast.

Favorite: Fort Sam Houston in San Antonio, TX. Many consider it as the country club of the army. Beautiful. That’s where the Army Medical Dept is located.... training of doctors, nurses, Medics, administrators, etc.
Least Favorite: Camp Shelby, MS, near Hattiesburg. That place is an armpit. Hot, humid, snakes, huge mosquitoes, etc.
Others..... Ft. Stewart, GA, Ft. Dix, NJ.

Favorite-- Keesler Air Force base...close to home....best job I ever had in the Air Force (First Sergeant), great leadership
Worst-- Osan Air Base S. Korea...a year away from my wife and kids...a ton of exercises (full up chem gear)...switched airframe after working on aircraft for ten years prior.
My list of assignments:
Spangdahlem Germany
Seymour Johnson AFB, NC
Sheppard AFB, TX
Osan AB, S. Korea
Aviano AB, Italy
Keesler AFB, MS
Shaw AFB, SC
And yes I loved Germany too, great food, Beer and great warm people.
Italy was beautiful but the people were hit or miss!
Always missed being in the US while overseas...you miss the convenience of things we take for granted.
Shaw sucked too!
Best TDY/Deployment (Temporary duty)
Holland (beautiful women that speak better English than I do!)
Worse TDY/Deployment-- They were all pretty good, but if i had to pick i would say Keflavik Iceland, I got kicked out of there and received an Article 15 for having too much fun early on! Was sent back to Germany after about 2.5 weeks...supposed to be there 60 days!

That looks a lot like them, except, when you are there up close, the ones I am talking about, seem more dark red in color, like the color of red brick. The highway goes right by them, real close, like a hundred yards away. When you are going north, they are on the left side of the road, and there are houses and a neighborhood to your right. There aren't any signs identifying them or anything. Also, the ones I am talking about, don't seem quite that tall, and the tops more rounded. I don't know for sure, if that is them or not. It looks similar, but different. I've been looking for photos made from the road, but I haven't found any.

I will say, I actually liked being a deployed Marine (3 tours in western Iraq) than being a garrison Marine. Hated the inspection-ready, clean-shaven lifestyle. Preferred living out of a humvee with the boys.
Same. Strange mindset to miss those days.

Best - Camp Fuji (Japan)
Least - 29 Palms/Camp Schwab (Okinawa)
I didn’t “hate” 29 Palms, but never went out of my way to go there. I did five CAXs with two being doubles to serve as a coyote. Besides bouldering in Joshua Tree, not much else to do.
Camp Schwab just sucked.
