“Since the spring of 2020, so for the past 16, 18 months or so, we have more than doubled our domestic terrorism case load from about 1,000 to around 2,700 investigations, and we have surged personnel to match, more than doubling the amount of people working that threat than the year before,” Wray testified during a Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee hearing on threats to the homeland.
“Certainly, the domestic terrorism caseload has exploded, and meanwhile the international terrorism caseload hasn’t subsided,” Wray said later during questioning from senators.
Wray noted that the “biggest chunk” of racially and ethnically motivated violent extremism the FBI tracks is now “favoring white supremacy.”
“We collect information about that threat, we have as you say prioritized that threat at a national threat priority level,” Wray said.

Just because they changed the definitions and parameters of what ‘domestic terrorists’ are doesn’t mean there are more of them, like the article is indicating

Agent provocateur's have been very busy this year manufacturing "crimes." And sending 13 agents to investigate a NASCAR door pull is surely taxing to their staff. And then they brought out a dozen of the big guns to arrest Roger Stone for made-up crime. Then there is all of that Russia, Russia, Russia investigation for Hillary that kept many busy for over 2 years.

I believe everyone who was in or around the Capital during the January 6th event was investigated by the FBI for domestic terrorism. I know my uncle had an investigation open on him and he simply was there and did not go into the capital. So their caseload numbers escalated from that one event. Since most FBI agents worked from home in 2020(covid) they needed to get their caseload numbers in 2021!
