Unless he was wearing night vision goggles or carrying an assault rifle or patrolling in a bearcat, I do not believe "militarization of the police" is the right battle cry for this instance.
In my opinion the "militarization" of police is more of mindset and set of tactics as opposed to the actual gear they use. Many cops have a mindset of "us vs them" and think that of criminals and potential criminals as enemies as opposed to fellow citizens, some of whom may need to be arrested. But I also don't think that was the case in this situation.

Well that's annoying. As soon as he is convicted, all we are gonna here is "If he was a white officer, there's no way he would be convicted." It's gonna be a race thing for sure. Truly sad, as this guy deserves to be in jail unless there is more to the story that we don't know. Very sad for her family. Especially the fiance.

Question, why can officers turn off their body cameras? Seems to defeat the purpose

The problem is that when the cameras are on the record emormous amounts of data. I have talk to my friend who is an officer about body cameras, and he would prefer that his stay on from the moment he clocks in to the moment he leaves. Unfortunately, the data storage systems available on a small wearable camera, are in adequate to record all of that data. Thus they have to turn it off and turn it on etc.

Sounds like some sort of argument went down if it's true that he shot her while she was sitting in her car talking to his partner.

There is certainly a cost effective solution to this problem. The technology can't be pick and choose though

The officer who shot her is Somali-America. The first Somali-American cop in MPLS. She was shot in a white neighborhood in MPLS that has some money not the richest neighborhood but doing okay.

Just skimmed the two links and read the local paper's story, was there indication that this was an accidental weapon discharge? I can't possibly imagine any reason why the officer would have intentionally shot across his partner seated in the front seat.

As an aside, I also find it interesting that in the updated local story identifying the officer, he is never specifically called a Somali, even as the victim is identified as being Australian several times.

I'm quite sure this would be a time when you turn it on.

That is a load of bs. You have to go out of your way to buy a system that doesn't have capable storage.

Doesn't explain the lack of useful dashcam audio as well.

I agree that this is a huge problem. I wouldn't necessarily call it militarization. It's just an unhealthy mindset that they've been trained with.

I wonder this too.

I can not imagine the hell that would wreak on you ears. Would take exceptional circumstances to fire inside the patrol car.

This is going to be.

A. He flipped out and had terrorist leanings.

B. He tried to handle his weapon with 12 thumbs.

Uh - oh.
