The militarization of police has more to do with tactics than equipment. I've noticed over the past 20 years cops are far more self protective and much more standoff-ish. They really approach the average citizen with much distrust

Yep. The training tactics are military based. It's why a lot of good people I know, law abiding citizen's under 35-40, don't trust the police. And these are upper middle class white kids. Not hood rats.

I know there are good ex military that make good Cops. But I don't trust people that trained and worked in war zones, to come home and police citizen's in the same way.

Y'all obviously have no clue about FOI requirements. You can't just overwrite data like that.

Sure you can. That's something that the local or state legislature can dictate. "Police departments are required to keep the video for XX days." There's no national requirement that would make them house video in perpetuity.

The problem is that when the cameras are on the record emormous amounts of data

Some friends and I were discussing this earlier and I had an idea: Could the cameras be set on short recording loops and there be a switch in the holster that triggers a longer recording every time the weapon is drawn?

In my opinion the "militarization" of police is more of mindset and set of tactics as opposed to the actual gear they use. Many cops have a mindset of "us vs them" and think that of criminals and potential criminals as enemies as opposed to fellow citizens, some of whom may need to be arrested. But I also don't think that was the case in this situation.

Very well stated and what I failed to articulate in my earlier post. Unless this was an accidental discharge or there is some very strange personal connection we aren't aware of this worries me.
