An Australian woman is dead after being fatally shot in her Minnesota home by police, according to the Star Tribune local newspaper. Forty-year-old Justine Damond, a meditation guide and coach who had been living in the U.S. for about three years, had called the police regarding a possible assault she heard near her home in Minneapolis, the Star Tribune reported. After two officers arrived at Damond’s home around 11:30 p.m. on Saturday, one officer shot her.

Minnesota’s Bureau of Criminal Apprehension (BCA) was unable to determine why Damond was shot because the responding officers did not have their body cameras turned on. However, sources told the Star Tribune that Damond met the officers outside of her home and was speaking with the officer in the driver’s seat when the officer in the passenger’s seat shot her through the door.

The officers have yet to be charged and are on paid leave. Must be nice, kill an innocent woman, still get paid.

There is a "bad taste" punch line there, but if this story is even halfway true (which is by no means a given), then this is no bueno.
Given that they frame the story by starting with a video of the Philando Castile shooting (just to make sure you remember), my "agenda" radar pinged pretty quickly.

Pretty blond lady from Australia in her pajamas who reported a disturbance behind her house.
Why did anyone have a weapon out and pointed through the car at a lady in her pajamas who called them?

Oh yeah, she had just come over here with her fiance (an American) and they were to be married soon.

This is why so many people are living by the Motto, never call the police for anything.

Look, I'm all in on the need for a competent and strong police force. I have friends on the force and other friends whose kids are on the force. Sometimes these stories are so outrageous that I cannot believe it. When I read about this one over the weekend, with pictures and backstory, it really gave the impression that something is terribly wrong with the training and comfort level of these officers that they would even have a weapon drawn at that time.

Seems to be a gaping hole in the story

I read this story a million times over from the OT thread. What happened exactly to make them kill her? Did she come up to the cop too fast or something?

When you have the power to arrest and kill people, you want the best and brightest. Police salaries don't attract the most qualified and the best and brightest. Because of this, many police departments hire people that aren't qualified emotionally or psychologically to be cops. And this is politically incorrect to say, but a lot of the newer cops I know are veterans who after combat overseas became cops and still think they're in a war zone.

Probably the worst case of police incompetence that might become a manslaughter case, I hate to make judgement not knowing all the facts.....but damn, just awful.

Shooter looked like he was engaging a threat in the video but his partner was pretty chill until the shots were fired. Not sure what to think but if it's a bad shoot, that guy needs to pay the price.

Absolutely need to be actual requirements for being a police officer and some high standards and salaries increased to attract viable candidates.
Police officers need to also realize their job is inherently dangerous, whenever civilians are getting killed needlessly, due to officers being on edge with their finger on the trigger at all times there needs to be a step back. Police officers, will get killed in their line of work, that's something you have to accept if you sign up for the position, you cannot go around killing civilians out of a sense of heightened alert and perceived actions.

My former secretary's husband is an officer and a former combat deployed marine. He's about as cool headed as they come. Exactly who you want with a badge. I don't know about some of these other Rambos, but I'd take a former marine in civilian blue any day.
