I thought of that too. Firing a pistol in a car might or might not damage your ears. It is a real stupid thing to do.

In this instance I absolutely agree. I'm not defending these officers.

I'm saying this as an explanation for why departments don't have body cams always on, typically.

This was a fairly new system. Most can be set to activate when your squad car door opens or lights are on. Can even keep a rolling 2 minutes recording to capture the two minutes before the camera is activated.

In this case it probably wouldn't have helped outside of audio as neither officer would have been squared up to face her. But some reports have the city cops almost never turning them on.

I would guess this was an accidental discharge, although poor handling of a firearm is still manslaughter. Ironically it might be easier to convict a cop for an accidental discharge than an intentional bad shooting.

At least they both tried to administer CPR.

Why did anyone have a weapon out and pointed through the car at a lady in her pajamas who called them?

The woman in a nightgown in horror movies who goes outside with a candle...is a grave threat to cops.

Candles can be dangerous, just like pencils, and dogs and small choking toys. All enemies of cops. Shoot first, ask later, go home because your life matters more than any other American.

Why frick is any cop ever getting away with manslaughter or murder - intent to kill...you shoot someone in the back running away, you have intent. Is there some sanctioned war passed by Congress that declared war on the American citizens by meatheads?

There isn't a hole gaping enough to explain the result of this situation.

I guess if enough people who don't "fit the description" get gunned down society might actually start to raise its awareness to the growing problem of the militarization of police.

Look up, GT's statement flew way over your head.

The problem is that when the cameras are on the record emormous amounts of data. I have talk to my friend who is an officer about body cameras, and he would prefer that his stay on from the moment he clocks in to the moment he leaves. Unfortunately, the data storage systems available on a small wearable camera, are in adequate to record all of that data. Thus they have to turn it off and turn it on etc.

Like most data recorders, it's ok if it overwrites. All that's needed is the last altercation in a shooting case.

Damn Minnesota has become the New Sweden, and I don't mean the Nordic settlers.

You can walk into best buy and pickup a 512 GB micro SD card for $60. Lack of storage is absolute bullshite. Its more like not wanting to get caught doing the wrong ducking thing.

The militarization of police has more to do with tactics than equipment. I've noticed over the past 20 years cops are far more self protective and much more standoff-ish. They really approach the average citizen with much distrust

There has to be more to this story. Especially if he fired across his partner from the passenger side.

And why the hell were neither out of the car?

Crazy story

The Minneapolis Police Department has 800 officers. Assume 600 patrol on any given day. If every officer had ten interactions with civilians lasting 20 minutes each, that alone is over 2000 hours of body cam footage that would have to be saved each day. That's over 12,000 hours per week. That storage gets eaten up fast, especially if they make a few arrests each day, then the footage must be stored long term. It's not as easy as going buy a memory card.

Why would data of routine encounters need to be stored long term? Write over the data daily until an event like this shooting which need to be archived long term

Save all footage for 30 days. If no complaints are filed within that time period delete the footage and reuse the space.

If a complaint is filed, archive that footage.

It's not hard. There are millions of security came in place right now doing exactly that.

That's the question. The fact that the cameras were not turned on makes me think the shooting isn't random at all and there's a backstory here that hasn't been found yet.

Y'all obviously have no clue about FOI requirements. You can't just overwrite data like that.

Not only did he apparently fire his gun while inside his car, but he did it across his partner.

His partner was sitting in the drivers seat talking tot he woman outside the car, he was sitting in the passenger's seat, and fired across his sitting partner hitting and killing her.

40 year old woman in her PJ's called the cops to report a disturbance and when they arrived she walked up to talk to them and just got blown away. Makes you not want to call the cops.
