Howard Hughes was never crazy in the sense of losing his mind. He had severe, crippling Obsessive Compulsive disorder (OCD). It was caused by his mother instilling a deep fear of germs in him at a young age. As he grew older it got more pronounced and his world shrunk. It got so bad he never left his room. And he started odd habits like saving his piss and not cutting fingernails.
But he was still a smart businessman and one of the world's wealthiest until the end. He never lost his touch in that regard.

He would have already done so. I think he has come close a few times but got the help he needed to remain grounded.
