Why Should Essential Workers That Stay Home During The Shutdown Be Fired?

A pilot preparing to take off Monday from Hollywood Burbank Airport in California took the routine step of radioing the air traffic control tower.
But instead of the usual back-and-forth conversation of coordinating departure, the pilot received a different response: “The tower is closed due to staffing,” according to audio recorded by LiveATC.net.
The exchange is one example of the impact the ongoing government shutdown is having on travelers across the US as air traffic controller staffing issues have led to delays at major airports and forced pilots in some areas to pivot to alternative workflows.
Controllers are considered essential workers, so they must work during the shutdown, but are not being paid.
Twelve Federal Aviation Administration facilities saw staffing shortages Monday night. The control towers in Burbank, Phoenix and Denver had so called “staffing triggers” reported in the public FAA operations plan. Other facilities that handle air traffic around airports in Newark, New Jersey; Jacksonville, Florida; Chicago, Washington, DC, and Indianapolis also were short staffed.
FIRE THEM NOW!

They will be paid for all their work once the shutdown ends.

Congress critters need to forego their pay and not receive backpay. That's something that bothers the hell out of me. It's all theater to them and costs them nothing to grandstand.

Air traffic controllers are essential workers, if they are not fired with enthusiasm.....they will be fired with enthusiasm.

Tell them to call Schumer's office. He is responsible

Point is pretty clear... Did they miss any days because of COVID? "Essential" is a sword that cuts both ways...

Take everything with a grain of salt that you read in articles. They don’t know what they’re talking about. They don’t know what an essential worker is. They don’t know what the exempt lists are and they don’t know how some people are paid and others aren’t. While there may be some standalone cases like this, this is largely bullshite on the Grand scale.

I have a hard time believing that ATCs from LAX and O'Hare are just taking off because their pay might be a little late. Those aren't exactly entry level jobs even for air traffic controllers, and it's not exactly something you want to dick around with.

If Congress gets paid, essential workers should get paid.
Suspend the paychecks of Congress like what is done with "essential workers" and you'll see the shutdown stopped with the quickness.

If they're essential, they will be working. Should be easy to understand.

The shutdown rules around pay are a band aid approach. I 100% agree with you by the way, but I think it was Buffett that said it best when he said that on the topic of budget, the rule should be that if congress doesn't pass a balanced budget and stick to it, then none of congress should be eligible for re-election. It'll never happen in my lifetime, but that would absolutely fix the issue of budget issues.

I got no problem with PTO being used as long as its earned.

They always forget too mention that part because it would go against their narrative

Yes, this is true, but when is it going to end? Could you work without pay for three months or would you have to quit and find a paycheck elsewhere? How about six months?
ATC is not exactly a skill that translates to other careers. If you are a medical professional, teacher, sales person, etc. it's not too challenging finding someone who will pay you to do it. ATC has one employer, the federal government. If they aren't paying, there is nowhere to go.

At least their union states publicly, they should not do anything like this, which would jeopardize air safety.
PS - To those who talk about not being paid... This is poor journalism as someone else pointed out. I don't get paid but two days a month... it doesn't mean I'm not getting paid. They signed an agreement to this possibility. It's a reason why the average ATC makes a good six figure salary and has benefits most of us can't imagine.
